As your question suggest, the two commandments are related.

"You shall not steal" forbids unjustly taking or keeping the goods of one's neighbor and wronging him in any way with respect to his goods. It commands justice and charity in the care of earthly goods and the fruits of men's labor. http://www.nccbuscc.org/catechism/text/pt3sect2chpt2art7.htm

"You shall not desire your neighbor's goods" forbids coveting the goods of another, as the root of theft, robbery, and fraud, which the seventh commandment forbids. http://www.nccbuscc.org/catechism/text/pt3sect2chpt2art10.htm

With love in Christ.

The 7th commandment is referring to "stealing", physically taking something that doesn't belong to you.
The 10th commandment is referring to "coveting" meaning to be jealous and wanting your neighbors possessions.

The 7th commandment has to do with a literal action. The 10th commandment has to do with the desire of the heart whether you physically act upon it or not.

The 7th commandment means that you shouldn't actually steal or take anybody's possessions. The 10th commandment means that you shouldn't envy or desire anybody's possessions. But they are both sinful because if you do these things you aren't doing what God wants you to do...you're breaking his commandments.

Hmmm... Don't steal vs. Coveting ...
one is the act of taking, the other is "grass is greener on the other side" syndrome that is, have a strong desire to get it...

I think the coveting one was just a cap to all the rules in the commandments...

...Don't do this... do this... don't do that...
and like don't even tempt yourself, buddy... kinda thing...

Peace be with you. The truth shall make you free.

The Ten Commandments as found in Deuteronomy are for those who believe in Moses, The 75 Commandment as found in the 4 Gospels are for those who believe in Jesus.

For the Law was given by Moses, but Truth and Grace came by Jesus Christ.

The 7th is a form of Greed and The 10th is a form of Lust and Envy at the same time.

To "covet" does not mean to steal...it means don't 'want' or envy what your neighbor has...be happy what you have yourself! To covet is to be greedy and God doesn't want you to be greedy...He'd rather you be happy for others and understand why they have what they have and why you have what you have...I hope this helps you to have a better understading of this!
