Does the army have a reason for doing that? Because I think our hair got nothing to do with training, personal hygiene or whatsoever. The only sensible reason I could think of is to intimidate and make you look dumb. I can't even asked the barber to shave it all off!

We're all soldiers aren't we? If we crew cut for hygiene and uniformality, i believe all ranks from the Generals to recruits need to crew cut. Why do I see sergeants officers spotting sideburns, having square tops etc. I good 2 by 4 is what they said in the hand book that all soldiers must maintain, now they're differeniating recruits like inmates. In some cases we're worst, I want good training, objective ones, not some humiliation. The only consolation I could only think of maybe training requirements need to test ones psychological toughest/weakness. What's with all these head lices pubic hair stuff. The army really need to live up to some maturity in thinking....

For the same reasons recruits all wear the same uniforms, sleep in the same accommodations, etc. It is to break down individualism and remove any class/social/economic barriers to building a team-oriented and obedient soldier.
And it does have to do with personal hygiene. Not so much in recruit training, but in field conditions. Spend three weeks without a shower in the desert and you'll be thankful for a buzzed head.
Just checking back in and I see you've added some details to your question. Unfortunately your additonal entry makes you appear stupid--comparing haircuts of active duty, experienced officers with raw recruits. After boot camp, soldiers all have the same haircut regulations. Why are you so worried about it anyway? If you've been through boot camp, it's over--move on. If not, get over it--your hair will grow back. Geesh.

yeah they are all right above. But also it can be traced back to the Roman Army... though probably not as shaved as we are. They had thier hair cut short so that when the got into close combat the enemy couldnt grab his hair to pull his head back and slit his throat. Nice lil tid bit of info aint it? It also proves that women shouldnt be treated special and should have htier hair removed. come on they cry about equality, so lets run as fast, do as many push up, and lets have our hair shaved like the men. Come on... then we'lll be equal, thats what yall allways wanted, while im at it, lets go die togther on the front lines in a combat rol... hooya
sorry....... I couldnt stop myself

the whole idea is to be the same as the guy next to you. he is no better or no worse. you prove your worth by your actions not hair style, clothes, jewelry, car or any other material means.
note: have you noticed that the women in the military are not required to shave their heads when entering boot camp/ That is the top brass's way of saying to them that will never actually be a part of the military.

2 reasons.
1. Beleive it or not some people have head lice!!!
2. It help remove individualism. Making you a part of the military instead of yourself. Part of the process of breaking you down to build you up at a later date into part of the big green machine!!!!!
As for the women, The powers that be decided that they should be able to keep some of their self pride. I do not want to open another can of worms but this was when women were not allowed in deployable units or on board ships.

Its just part of the well designed psychology of boot camp.
Strips away the old civilian "You".
Boot camp is not about bullying and intimidation.
Off topic a bit.
THOSE TEEN BOOT CAMPS!
Can't stand the thought of them.
Military boot camp psychology is not applicable to kids with problems.
I have read accounts of kids being ran ragged...all day just grinding away. Tormented by psychotics.
Here is a boot camp hint.
Most of boot camp is spent in boring classes.
Boot camp is not about humiliation.

Hygiene, zero maintainance, and it's also one of the ways to break the new recruits down. You are stripped of some of your personal identity.

During BCT your chances of getting head lice is good, so to prevent such occurasnces, they crop your hair down to the roots.

Intimidation is a big part. If you go into the military you better stop looking for sensible answers, or at least what makes sense to you.

Well, you have a good point. For those who say it's for "cleanliness" what about the women in basic training? They get to keep their long hair.
