Catalytic converters (in the exhaust) don't have a specified life span. They can go as early as 40k miles or less, or last as long as 400k miles or more.

To replace one simply because it reaches a certain mileage is a waste of money. They don't need replaced until they fail, which means they either get plugged up and won't let exhaust out, or the insides become loose and rattle around.

Which converter are you asking about. The emission converter for the exhaust system can last as long as you maintain your motor and make sure the intake manifold is not sucking oil out of the plenum pan. Big problem for the converters oil consumption due to a leaking plenum pan in the manifold. Trans converters another problem. Maintenence is key. I have found a good trans converter that has a ceramic loc-up clutch and when it gets hot will not puke gunk into the trans and cause catostrophic failure. Yes the factory converters are pooey and have had issues. However i have seen several well maintained veh with factory converters still in good shape. Just try not to put too much power to them as the hydraulic system is not designed for the extra load of the extra power. That is where a good shift kit will improve the life of any converter

About 100,000 miles. You can clean them with a solvent to get the burnt motor oil out.Cat.Convertor. T.Convertors go at about a 100,000. Because they are lockup.Lockup convertors are junk.I always replace with a standard. They are the main cause for transmission failure in Automatics.

theres no motor oil in the turque converter and it will last forever if you keep the ATF "automatic tranny fluid" change fluid and filter every 40,000 miles give or take if you tow a lot you should do it sooner
