As a studying nutrtionist I dont recommend cutting out one single food group. Your body needs carbs for energy and metabolism functions. However I am still following a calorie plan in order to burn more fat and build more muscle.
I am actually helpin several people achieve there goals too.

Since I was rudly attacked for my answer I must place this column of information to clarify myself. Deepest apologies I dont normally post long answers.
In order to loose fat you must provide your muscles with enough energy to keep excercising, and this goes for any diet elimintating nutrients from the diet. The purpose is not to eliminate your bodies nutrient intake rather to manage them. So I’m definitely not saying don’t eat low carb foods, I am saying watch the manner in which you take them in. Understanding how to fuel your muscles prior to exercise sessions and replacing fuel after workouts is critical or your body will break down muscle for fuel.
Grains and whole wheats are a great source of fiber and I understand completely that so are fruits and vegetables.
Eating a low carb diet or a diet that eliminates one of the needed nutrients results in decreased muscle power, increase muscle fatigue and low exercise performance and endurance.
Many People misunderstand a low carb diet--and with the several people that I have worked with who have been on diet plans with too many restrictions find it harder to maintain their weight when they want to go back to eating normal. I, therefore, recommend eating a calorie based food plan where they limit their intake, that way when they have reached their ideal weight, they can steadily increase their recommend intakes without the stress of rebounding weight!

Hey hun
Basically, I changed both my diet and my exercising habits.
With regards to diet:
- I drink a 3 litres of water a day to flush out toxins and replenish all of my organs (more while exercising)
- I eat heaps of fruit and veges (high in vitamins and antioxidants)
- I don't drink alcohol, or smoke
- I stopped having coffee, soft drinks, fast foods, fatty foods and foods high in bad carbs
- I eat foods that are high in omega 3 fatty acids (i.e LSA, tinned fish, etc)
- I try to eat 5-6 small meals daily
Exercise is important, but without a balanced diet it just won't work. So my fitness goals are:
- Walking briskly everywhere I go throughout the day and I try and increase my normal daily activity
- I do about 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercises every second day
- Remember to stretch muscles before and after exercise and hydrate constantly (plain water)
- Every second day (instead of plain cardiovascular workouts) I do cardio + resistance training for an hour using Jillian Michael's DVDs (The hardcore chick from "The Biggest Loser")
It's so worth it! I feel great. I've only been doing this for a short amount of time but I've nearly reached my goal and I won't stop!

I was 75 lbs overweight after the birth of my child. I used an older workout called Jane Fonda's Lower Body Solution (with a step bench). I did it twice a day. Once first thing in the morning, and once right before dinner. I didn't change my diet at all, and I lost the first 50 lbs in 4 months. The workout gave me a completely flat abdomen, tight butt, and great thighs. You can still find it at Half.com.

I ran on the treadmill every day or every other day, I ate more protein for breakfast, its more filling.. like have an egg and wheat toast or some plain oatmeal (without sugar). I also completely stopped drinking pop, chocolate milk and fruit juices (too much sugar and calories). As far as milk goes.. I went from drinking whole milk to skim milk. I started drinking green tea and water. I stopped eating at fast food places and I limited myself to 1200 calories a day. Whenever I got hungry I'd keep myself busy, gardening, internet, videogames until the feeling went away.
I lost 36 pounds and counting.

I didn't worry so much about dieting, but made sure I eat my share of fruits and vegetable everyday and didn't keep junk in my house, so if I wanted icecream, I would drive to the store and buy one pint. I'm really lazy, so I really wanted if I went. I drank lots of water, selzer with lemon to flush my system.
TayBo video four days and two 1-hour walks with my dog per week.
10 pounds in 2 1/2 months!

Zone diet, I dropped 30lbs easy, If you can live wihtout bread and sugar it is the best! don't do Atkins or south beach fad diets. Just cut out bread, grains and sugear and everything else is ok.
except sugary fruit like banana, watermelon, citrus. all veggies, all meats are ok. except carrots.
