I was raised in a semi-religious home and attended Catholic schools...but he asked me what the relationship was between the Holy Spirit and the Father and the Son....I responded "it is the mystery of faith" in kind of a humorous tone. He said "no really" and I felt kind of ashamed that I could not easily spit out an answer. So I said "the Holy Spirit is the unknowing and all encompassing embodiement of the Father and Son...it just is what it is." I know.....lame. He said he knew the Father as 'God', the Son as 'Jesus' and the Holy Spirit as 'what??'....how would you answer his question.

I have received God's precious gift of Holy Spirit. It is the most valuable/wonderful/best of all the processions I have, I had or will have. I want you to sincerely ask God to give you the Holy Spirit, because He will definitely do so, if you ask.
So John said to all of them, "I baptize you with water, but someone is coming who is much greater than I am. I am not good enough even to untie his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. " Luke 3:16
He was talking about Jesus. It is Jesus who baptized me with Holy Spirit.

Here is the relationship:- Jesus, is the son of God, God's beloved son, as far as we can understand, it is like how in earth a son will have relationship with the father not genetic but spiritual/emotional. Jesus said "He is way, the truth and life". So Jesus is the only way to the Father, our God. When we read the bible and listen to teachings of Jesus, He would have given more focus to God, so only God is our priority. When we get Holy Spirit(He is the Gift from God), the Spirit will tell us everything God tells us and guide us in the path we should take. Without Him it is so impossible for our flesh to withstand this world. So ask and He will give.

The Holy Spirit is the Third Person of the Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit has many other names in the Bible. He is known as the Spirit of Truth, the Spirit of Christ, the Teacher, the Comforter, the Counsellor and so forth. In short the Holy Spirit is commonly referred to as the Third Person of the Godhead.

What is the holy spirit?

A comparison of Bible texts that refer to the holy spirit shows that it is spoken of as ‘filling’ people; they can be ‘baptized’ with it; and they can be “anointed” with it. (Luke 1:41; Matt. 3:11; Acts 10:38) None of these expressions would be appropriate if the holy spirit were a person.

Jesus also referred to the holy spirit as a “helper” (Greek, pa·ra´kle·tos), and he said that this helper would “teach,” “bear witness,” “speak,” and ‘hear.’ (John 14:16, 17, 26; 15:26; 16:13) It is not unusual in the Scriptures for something to be personified. For example, wisdom is said to have “children.” (Luke 7:35) Sin and death are spoken of as being kings. (Rom. 5:14, 21) While some texts say that the spirit “spoke,” other passages make clear that this was done through angels or humans. (Acts 4:24, 25; 28:25; Matt. 10:19, 20; compare Acts 20:23 with 21:10, 11.) At 1 John 5:6-8, not only the spirit but also “the water and the blood” are said to ‘bear witness.’ So, none of the expressions found in these texts in themselves prove that the holy spirit is a person.

The correct identification of the holy spirit must fit all the scriptures that refer to that spirit. With this viewpoint, it is logical to conclude that the holy spirit is the active force of God. It is not a person but is a powerful force that God causes to emanate from himself to accomplish his holy will.—Ps. 104:30; 2 Pet. 1:21; Acts 4:31.

for a quick & easy (non-lame answer, the next time around)

God (the Father) is the God of the Old Testament
Jesus (the Son) is the God who became flesh & dwelt among us in the New Testament
& God the Holy Spirit is the God who is among us now, as He came down at the day of Pentecost

& yes it is wise to be always prepared for the reason for the hope that you have, especially if a non-Christian is asking you for an answer

God the Father:
God as Father reigns with providential care over His universe, His creatures, and the flow of the stream of human history according to the purposes of His grace. …God is Father in truth to those who become children of God through faith in Jesus Christ.

God the Son:
Christ is the eternal Son of God. In His incarnation as Jesus Christ, He was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. …He honored the divine law by His personal obedience, and in His death on the cross, He made provision for the redemption of men from sin. He is the ONLY mediator between God and men.

God the Holy Spirit:
The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God. …He exalts Christ. He convicts of sin, of righteousness and of judgment. …He enlightens and empowers the believer and the church in worship, evangelism, and service.

I break it down in terms of what we get from each.

From God, we receive Grace
From Jesus, we receive atonement
From the Holy Spirit, we receive righteousness

The Holy Spirit consumed Jesus, basically he was entirely filled with it and conceived by it. We are partially filled by the Holy Spirit since our sinful nature still weighs heavy on us, but if we have the Holy Spirit, our sinful nature is destroyed upon our death and we are totally consumed by righteousness.

This question comes up often and does confuse people. it's a really simple answer. It's the unification of the father and son and our faith. It is what is unatural to us till we are with god it is not an entitily per say but the faith that is god. In simple form it is the home, world, and space that god exists in an where we want to be. It is Gods place for us.

True, people do spread more of what steers man so far away from god.
In answer to your question i find it very important and relevant to who Jesus is. In studying the word of god, there is a verse that says 'Great is the mystery of godliness, god was manifest in the flesh, seen of angels, preached unto the gentiles and recieved up into glory.' The bible also tells us that jesus said He and his father are one. In scripture our faith is taken from the Holy Bible bcause it is within its covers that we build our faith upon the greatness of God.
In discussion of support for what i believe in, my foundation is upon the gospel of Jesus christ.
Without argument or disagreement: like Peter, Jesus said to him Blessed art thou Peter son of Barjonas., For flesh and blood hath not revealed (who peter said he was ) this unto you but my father which is in heaven.
To believe what relationship is between the holy spirit , the father and the son can only come by a divine revelation from God above.
Or how else would we believe that these three are one revealed in the Man Christ Jesus - Bodily? Peter said to Jesus "Thou art the Christ, The son of the Living God"
The holy spirit is the comforter - who was sent to identify our spiritual adoption to our heavenly father above, by being born again, of water and of that same spirit.
This is one of the most powerful studys' i have ever had the privledge of sitting, found in the life of Jesus, and with The Apostles who preached " Christ crucified and his ressurection.
