When I pray my only expectation is that I'm being heard by a loving Father in Heaven. Whether or not I am asking for any thing or just checking in thru out the day. I know that my prayer is heard and answered one way or another!

That God will mold my heart to be willing to do His will and to accept the things I cannot change and give me wisdom to know the difference. If I ask in His will He will grant it. He is Master.
He saved me and that's an awesome answer to prayer.
Most of our questions are answered in the Bible already. Seek the answers there in prayer.
Because the prophets often brought news of judgment and didn't tell the people what they wanted to hear which was that they were going to get by with sinning. Doesn't work that way. God chastises those He loves. Other trials come our way to purify us and build our faith in God.
Stephen did not love his own life unto the death. He, like Paul, counted it all joy to be counted worthy to suffer for Christ. The Holy Ghost gave him boldness to preach the truth and the religious bunch absolutely hated him for it but Paul, was standing there, holding the coats of the men stoning Stephen and was later saved. Jesus STOOD from His throne at the right hand of God and welcomed Stephen home. Stephen didn't feel the stones anymore as it says he "fell asleep". Those who persecute Christians, God is keeping record of and will one day bring them to account. Vengeance is His, not ours.
One who gives up on God has given up on His Son. They are One. There is no life without living it in Christ.
God did not forsake Jesus on the cross. He promised to God with us THROUGH the fire and when one dies they GAIN their life, not lose it. We can't give up because God doesn't move when or how we want Him to. He hasn't changed. He can deliver us from the fire like He did the three Hebrew children but they went into the fire first confident that if God didn't deliver them, they would live again in resurrected bodies and would still serve and trust Him. It's called being a living sacrifice which is our reasonable service.
We have to tie ourselves to the alter and that is a life-long process to wrestle with the flesh every day. People do us wrong. God doesn't mistreat His children. He will never leave you or forsake you. God doesn't move, we do. Let's make sure it's always closer to Him.

I am Agnostic with Buddhist leanings.
I am not an Athiest.
When I direct my thought to ....lets call it the creator of the universe.....I try not to have expectations.
I don't expect to see bright light or burning bush or hear a voice dictating its wishes or demands.
Agnostic=I don't know.
And Buddhism is not a religion.
The people at Dachau and Aushwitz probably did a lot of praying.
Maybe John McCain and his fellow POWS prayed that the North Vietnamese wouldn't torture them that day.
The victims of Pol Pot probably did some praying too.
What did it get them?
And televangelists prattle on about talking to God like God was giving them stock market tips.
We will have the answers just after we draw our last breath.
And not a moment sooner.

I do not pray at all, or wish for anything in this life, because both are rather pointless.
You will not get anything for praying, only the work you do yourself to make things better in your life, or self comfort for praying that a sick friend/family members gets better soon.
For wishing, if I wished to never go hungry, then I could wish for all the food I could ever possibly need. But then, I could as easily counter that and wish I never needed to eat again.
Each is the same, and rather pointless, so I explained in small detail why I do not pray for anything at all.

As Stephen did, we pray for guidance in doing the will of Our Father.

i hope to be satisfied in whatever the outcome of the prayer is, and to be blessed for at least praying to God.

When I pray, I expect to lose minutes of my life that I will never have back. It would be more useful for me to slap myself repeatedly than to pray to some imaginary creature because it gives me the warm and fuzzys

I do not have expectations when I pray. I rather have hope. I do not pray that Allah does things for me; I pray that Allah enables me to do things if they are in my best interest (as He sees them).
Peace

If you mean as in "Ask and ye shall receive" it's all about faith. I don't "expect" anything, I just know. That's what having faith is all about.
