It depends on how old you are and what shape you are in. If you are young and in good shape, I say go for it!
The regulatory systems seem to start breaking down at around age 40.
I eat alot of salad because it is healthy and has alot of fiber. You don't have to stick to the boring stuff. Be creative. The other night I had French Gruyere cheese on a Spinach salad with pitted Calamatta olives and Fig (fig paste from trader joes ), Wine Vinegar and Olive Oil dressing.
Doesn't that sound good!
I don't think there is so much of a problem of eating things that are bad, I think it is worse to completely ignore things that are good. Also, I think exercise will make you feel good too.
Sometimes the best things do not come with a label. For instance, alot of health stuff comes from those bulk food places. Make sure you are getting whole grains, like brown rice.
Also, to make sure that your are getting "quality" whole grain make sure that there is a high amount of fiber. 5 grams per serving is a good amount. (you need about 30gms per day)
In spite of the fact that potatoes have been demonized, white potatoes are almost the most nutritious thing in existance. You can live on them. You can make mashed potatoes with half white potatoes and half sweet potatoes. You will get all the fiber, vitamin c and magnesium plus the beta carotene in the sweet potatoes.
If you think of some good ingredient, go to allrecipes.com and type it in to get a recipe.
It think there is too much emphasis on what you "should not" eat rather than what is healthy.
If you eat healthy for a while you will not know what you saw in all that junk!

Make sure that the items you eat are less than 5% fat, especially saturated fat which is linked to high cholesterol and heart problems. Food should not be more than 10% sugar, which still seems a lot to me. Look out for salt levels (2.5 times the sodium level). Try to eat lots of raw vegetables, raw fruits, grilled or steamed fish, skinless chicken, and avoid eating too much wheat or gluten.

Hyfurctose Corn Syryp (found in soda and a lot of juices) this is very bad for you. I know a guy who cut this out of his diet and did nothing else and lost 10 pounds.
Too much saturated fat (fats found in fried foods, fast food, cakes, ect). Good fats are found in fish, olive oil, and nuts (though be careful of nuts they are high in calories).
Too many carbs and sugar. (Stay away from white carbs, eat wheat, brown rice, and when you need sure use natraul sugar).
Stay away from diet foods. When you eat something sweet and your body does not find the calories it throughs you all out of wack. Not to mention some substiutes cause cancer.
Stay away from mecury (found in farm raised salmon and tuna). It never leaves your body!
Do eat: Fruits, Veggies, Whole Weat Products, Lean Meats (Fish, top Sirloin, Chicken, ect.)
And don't forget lots of water.

Read the ingredients and if you see Partially Hydrogenated in the ingredients then this means it's bad for you, it's Trans Fat.
Also while looking at the ingredients look for high fructos corn syrup, dextros, sugar, etc..These are all sugars and they are bad for you.
Cheers
