I believe that it's talking about super large humans, as the weather conditions in those days was possibly a lot better than now-a-days, then it was more likely that people could grow bigger & taller...
Wasn't there a giant in the land of the Philistines called Goliath, and there are a few other mentions of giants as well.

You have to realize the average size of a person back then was pretty short. Around 5 foot something for most men. Anyone over 6 feet tall would have been of course considered a giant. Even now we have people 7 feet tall and we consider them giants to us as well.
