did you maybe mean south korea? we've been there since the 50's and are still there. We've long been out of 'nam and I have yet to compare Iraq to 'nam if that's what you were meaning. As a wife i refuse to believe that it's going to get as bad to spit on soldiers that are coming home from the pain of war. If it does get that bad i hope i don't live to see that day.

Gerald Ford was the President in 1975 when the troops were officially pulled out of Vietnam. Richard Nixon (before Watergate forced his resignation) was the instrumental Presidential influence. Lyndon B. Johnson was the President who was the major reason for the escalation of the troop involvement in Vietnam in the middle-60s.

By April 30th, 1975, even the U.S. Embassy had been evacuated. If any Americans stayed behind, it was because they wanted to or they were completely out of touch.

When I say "out of touch," it means they had blended in with the locals and didn't keep abreast of events through the embassy and consulate. If they had kept in touch, they'd know about the upcoming plans to evacuate and they would have left long before Saigon fell on April 30th, 1975.

Come back from the 70s buddy !
US did not want to pull out, they were pushed out of VN.
Sad part is they did not learn any lesson and are facing the same fate In Iraq.
Now you can ask your question again replacing Iraq with VN.
