Well...I do know a few things about backyard weddings since we had one in our family....but not in Arkansas.... We had one in the yard of a personal friend.....rented chairs from a rental place, and an arch and candles....had a buffet meal in the same place after the wedding was over.

Comparing to having one in a church, I thought it was more work because you had to bring in everything that is already available in a church setting. And the way we saved money was on almost everything. We made as many flower accessories as we could like hair pieces for the younger girls, some corsages, etc. out of silk flowers. We got a florist who made just some of the flowers....had a Hawaiian theme with leas for the the singers, and cut them down for the smaller girls. The florist also allowed us to pay for some of the flowers after the wedding which stretched some of the costs out. We searched for a less expensive wedding cake and laid real orchids on top. It is "wired" flowers that are the most expensive...( the labor involved) so you can save money using some loose ones.

So my suggestion is find a park, or pretty location you can use and make it work. We also found a bouquet idea off the Internet under weddings...printed one we liked and took it to the florist...it turned out beautifully. Decide your colors and string up some white lights for later in the evening. They add lots of atmosphere.

I hosted a backyard wedding last August for my friend's daughter.

We had about 50 guests. at the wedding, (more at the reception.) We had the reception at the community club, so I didn't rent chairs. We had some garden benches and lawn chairs for the older folks to sit, and everybody else stood. A wedding ceremony doesn't last too long, it was no problem.

My back yard is not fancy at all. Just grass, a few trees, and bordered by 40 acres of pine woods. I borrowed a Christmas lighted arch from a friend, wired magnolia leaves on, and decorated it with tulle and ribbon in the bride's colors. (Purple and green) I borrowed a few big potted ferns, and used a ficus tree from my home for the "altar" area. It was beautiful! And practically no cost.

If you're having a reception at the same location, then you will have to have a plan in case the weather isn't so great. That means either a tent, or moving the party inside.
My house wasn't really big enough for that, so if it had rained we were going to have the ceremony in the club house as well. Tents are expensive to rent, a 50 person tent was over $350. And we are on well water, and I would have worried about that many people flushing the toilet, we would have rented porta pottys. I know that is not elegant, but better than running my well dry, lol!

Good luck in finding a site!

My mom and step-dad had a backyard wedding. We rented chairs and glasses. That's it. They purchased a wedding cake and we went to M&M's to get snacks and finger food. The ceremony was at 7pm, so we had told everyone to eat before hand because we were serving an actual dinner. But I did make a bunch of sandwhich and stuff, so no one went hungry.

It was really simple but sweet. I'm pretty sure they found the minister from a list that they got from the city hall. The chairs and glasses we got from a party rental store nearby.

Local county parks might suit you better, have more room, have better facilities, and be picturesque. Ours was cheap, it was done in a county park, and our marriage is still there after 26 years, unheard of for our generation.

Best to you both.
