Should I stay with Sheriff's Department working Detentions which I hate, but have opportunities to transfer to other divisions in a few years, or transfer to small ski resort police department where I can work patrol which I love, but have limited opportunities within the department? Both have similiar pay and benefits.
Detentions I work 3 days a week/ Patrol I would work 4 days. Any help would be apprecaited.

Both will pay for me to finish my masters degree, however, working detentions 3 days a week would make it easier.

you seem to have a dilemma on your plate.

first ...it would be nice to be doing what you enjoy and get paid for it too. the law enforcement job would/could lead to court positions too as i understand it. a masters degree in law enforcement would open a few worthy positions in life.

i'm sure that you are totally more able to map out the separate routes of the alternative careers. but the police or justice system seems to have more options for sure.

whatever you decide to achieve, be sure you don't put yourself into your own private jail. good luck and good wishes to you.

If you hate working detentions than why would you not consider the other job. Decide if you want to move up in rank, and how fast can you move up if this is what you want? Look at what you want, and how to achieve them within the two jobs. Which have the best opportunities for you in the long wrong? Is your Master's Degree going to move you up in status in the Sheriff's Department or not? Ask yourself these questions? and you will be able to come out with the correct answer yourself.

If having the chance to ski worth a lesser salary, then go with the police. People that love their jobs are more productive and less stressed out than those that do it for the money. Go for what you have passion for. That's worth money in itself. And you can always change again later on. I've done both detention and patrol, and you have to go for what you are happiest with pending you can get the job done.

Dont stay in a job you hate. you will burn out quickly and resent it and unconsiously wont do as good a job, which can hurt your future advance opportunities. You need to go with what will make you happier. good luck!
