The best place to start is with the people that you meet while showing your dog. If you aren't showing your dog and your dog isn't involved in ANY type of "work" or competition, then s/he shouldn't be bred. Animals should only be bred to improve the breed. They should never be bred because they are AKC, they have Champion lines, they are "gorgeous", they are the "best pet ever", etc. Remember, a great pet doesn't make a good breeding dog.

You should also be a member of your national breed club. Talk to people there for additional information. Use the breed club website to find the code of ethics and responsible breeder guidelines.

None of these links are anti-breeding websites. They are pro-responsible and ethical breeding.

Basic rule, above all else:
If you don't know the family history of both dogs for 10 (ten) generations, thereby easily ruling out genetic defects inherent in the breed or breed(s) composed for the animal's mix, DO NOT BREED THE ANIMALS!
Dogs in America are very overbred, and genetic defects abound; some causing early death and family heart break.
PLEASE be ethical and fair to the furture homes of your puppies!

Go on puppy find.com and select your breed find a breeder in your area and email her your questions. Be sure to ask about health certifications needed and email her pictures of yours and meet her one on one to see if your dogs are within the AKC standards. Just because your dogs are registered does not mean they are good breeding quality
