i'm taking a religion class...it's basically a history class where we go through all the different religions. anyway i was just wondering you know how like when you're learning about the puritans how it seems like their entire lives revolve around their religion...is that the way it really was? or was it more like today where people use it as a guide and don't question everything with whether god would approve or not? were they really just normal people and that's just what they emphasize when they teach it to us?

You have to understand the day in which the puritans live and the day in which we live. The mores are totally different. In those days the Judeo-Christian paradigm was in the warp and woof of our society. Kids grew up in schools with the English Primer and the Holy Bible as textbooks. That strong influence on our culture lasted all the way into the 1950's. Since then a change slowly took place until today we have witnessed just about the end of the Judeo-Christian paradigm. The new paradigm is Materialism. Under the old paradigm, man was valued because he was made in the image of God. Under Materialism, man is valued according to his worth to the community.

The central tenet of Puritanism was God's supreme authority over human affairs, particularly in the church, and especially as expressed in the Bible. This view led them to seek both individual and corporate conformance to the teaching of the Bible, and it led them to pursue both moral purity down to the smallest detail as well as ecclesiastical purity to the highest level.

On the individual level, the Puritans emphasized that each person should be continually reformed by the grace of God to fight against indwelling sin and do what is right before God. A humble and obedient life would arise for every Christian

Back then, that was absolutely normal. And in a way, even today, there are people like that. Unfortunately because the mainstream society tends to separate religion and everyday life, these kind of people are deemed as freaks simply because their lives do revolve around the guidelines of their religion.
A lot of the separation between life and religion has only happened in the last few decades. People want to be comfortable and do not want to feel guilty or convicted. This was the beginning of hipocrisy.

The puritans understood the law in simpler terms than most do today. Most of the ways to circumvent the law that are made use of today which create a general acceptance of relative morality had not been invented at that time. Also the widespread rejection of absolute right and wrong didn't exist to the extent that it does today.

The puritans really loved and served God.400 years ago when the Puritans landed in Virgina, they fasted and prayed for 3 days. Then they planted a cross and Thanked God for this land, that they where bring the word of God and the message of Jesus Christ. On April 29,2007 on that same beach 1000's of Christians are going to gather, and rededicate America back to God.<><

That's how it was, baby.

A Puritan of 16th and 17th century England was any person seeking "purity" of worship and doctrine so by definition... it was the foundation of their lives.

But I think we all practice a religious way of life... it's founded on what we believe and we get up everyday with a value about life, rules we've set around ourselves, a goal/dream, and we pursue it with a routine.

The difference is that we are more individualistic in our era in our rituals and beliefs. There are still folks that believe in communities of a shared faith that have the same values about life, common rules (like the Bible), an identical goals (like environmentalists), and they pursue it together (through changing laws, nonprofit organizations, churches, etc).

Think about it.
What's your foundational faith about life and how do you live it?

Society back then was particularly centered around religion. Religion was a part of government, part of education, part of just about everything, and because of that, every single failing or corruption in government or education, etc infected the religious associations.

They were normal people like us, but since religion was branched out everywhere into every institution, they did not experience the same kind of freedoms like we do. In other words, we can look at things like entertainment, sports, politics, etc as they are, but back then they wondered, "Does this increase God's glory? Does this aid his kingdom? Does this help aid my salvation?" etc.
