I don't understand why so many of these questions/ answers are completely incomprehensible nonsense. I'm not trying to be mean, but it seems like an awful lot of people didn't learn anything at all in English Class. I know my english is not perfect, but some of the questions and answers I've read are just completely impossible to understand. I'm not even talking about all of the slang and internet abbreviations- there are a lot of people who clearly don't know how to communicate effectively when writing. In your opinion, is it just laziness, or is there a growing segment of the population that has little or no understanding of the english language?

I am not trying to be offensive with this question, and I specifically said that I was not referring to slang or internet-speak. I am a mom about to send my oldest child off to kindergarten, and I find it disturbing that there are so many people running around who don't seem to have absorbed any education at all.
Oh, and I'm a junior college drop out. I am not some ivy league snob- I just want to understand why there are so many people who seem to be below junior high standards.
I'm sorry if I upset anyone, but I really feel it was uncessary to be rude to me.

Television, video games, the dumbing-down of the electorate, using George W. Bush as a role model; take your pick. When was the last time you saw a child reading a book for entertainment? or, for school for that matter? It is shameful, really, and we will become a third-world country in no time if it continues.
It seems to me that kids never go to school anymore. Three weeks for winter break, two weeks for spring break, President's Day, Admission Day, a week (or two) at Thanksgiving, MLK Day, etc. Kids in every other industrialized nation attend many more days of school than Americans do in the public school system.
Despite the fact that college is available to more Americans than ever before, only about 20% who matriculate end up graduating. Many of them are simply unable to do the work. Junior colleges have had to take up the slack by offering remedial classes (remedial? in college? It seems like another oxymoron to me!).
The slashing of funding, poor teacher salaries, gangs, poor security on campus, poverty..... I could go on and on. Thank goodness I was born long before any of these ills and got a decent education. We will end up with kids and adults being able to cope only with jobs in the fast food industry. Outsourcing is getting worse, and besides being cheaper for companies, I think it is due to our population becoming more and more illiterate.
Happy thoughts, huh?

School dropouts, truants, illiterates, gangstas, rappers, dopers, parentless dysfunctional teens, misguided live-for-today-the-hell-with tomorrow teens, etc. etc.
pick one or all of the above.
Since the breakdown in traditional family values that started in the 60's, it's all evolved and been reduced to what we see here today.
The inability of these poor, misguided waifs to put together simple, coherent sentences ensures increasing numbers of single mothers and their children are added to our Welfare rolls as more and more of them find they cannot get a job due to lack of skills, training and education.
Those who don't have these skills, in defense of themselves, will point out it's just "casual typing" or even "internet slang" and "why should I care, it's just the internet?"...wow, talk about reaching for an excuse to cover a third-grade level education.

curiously no longer. It makes me ask your self if English is even our community language anymore. i'm happy to presented this to Yahoo! solutions interest. I mean there is even a spell examine button. Is it too a lot to ask that the context of those question be one which something human beings can understand?

I noticed the illiteracy. Most people on here are Americanos, so I think it's because teachers don't get paid much. Our teachers in Canada are unionized and make over $60,000 to start.

i think when it comes to online post a lot of people don't care if they can pass 10th grade english with their statement, it's just and online post. if i mis-type and you can't understand why should i care.
i have issue with people who think that there isn't such thing as casual typing.
but i also take issue with people who purposely misspell, like gawd, kewl

I think it is a mix of laziness and just not knowing how to use punctuation, how to spell, how to use sentence structure, etc..
If I can't read the question, then I do not attempt to answer it. It's not worth my time.
Cheers.
