One way to do it would be to hang a shirt up somewhere or even lay it flat and give the kid squirt bottles with the dye in it. It wouldn't be an exact tye dye effect but it would be along the same lines as that.

I have tie-dye experience from my camp counselor days! The problem with some of the home dyes is that the colors can get muddy and fade. We've had the best results with a kit. It's been around for years and is still available from HearthSong (http://www.hearthsong.com/hearthsong/product.do?section_id=0&bc=1005&pgc=193) You'll have to soak the shirt in the fixative ahead of time, but your two-year old should be able to use the dye bottles to squirt on the color. (Using the bottles helps you to control the color.) The shirts made with this kit have bright colors that last a long time and, I'm pretty sure, don't have to be washed separately.

let him twist the shirt and help him to add the rubber bands. you will have to supervise the dipping in bleach though. unless you are using a white t shirt then get some die like rid. have him wear some gloves and super vise him dipping the shirt into the dye. once you have dyed the shirt, you can use white vinegar and water to set the dye..
