I have a test on Epilepsy tomorrow for my health class however I missed a class and I need to know what a persons blood pressure would be after the seizure, also heart rate, pulse. oxygen level and how long would these stay "abnormal" before returning to normal. I know all the other symptoms such as convulsions, dizziness and ect... but i don't know what the "internal symptoms" would be. And would it be possible for everything to return to normal before paramedics arrive?

Thanks

There are several types of seizures - the mose dramatic ones, the generalized tonic clonic convulsions can cause a temporary increase in blood pressure and heart rate similar to strenuous exercise, these come back to normal in a few minutes. During this type of seizure, the patient has very poor respiration and oxygen levels can drop rapidly - very common to see SaO2's in the 70's and lower. These come back to normal rapidly once the seizure - usually only 1-3 minutes - is over, and even quicker if oxygen is handy. These patient may bite their tongue, cheeks or lips. They may become incontinant of urine or feces. Generalized seizures longer than 5 min. are a medical emergency and can cause death.

While many patients have a prolonged "post-ictal" - that is after the seizure -confusion period lasting hours, I have seen many patients that are largely back to normal, including a normal EEG with in 15-30 minutes.

All of the above is only for generalized seizures, partial simple and partial complex seizures may have no physiologic changes.

Psychogenic non-epileptic seizures also have no changes, and can last 30 min or more.

I'm not sure what you mean by "internal symptoms". I hope this helps. I'll be on line for a bit and can answer additional questions on seizures.

Shortly after a seizure the patients blood pressure and pulse rate could be elevated. It is not possible to give a Blood pressure reading as everyone is different. The pulse rate could be as high as 120 or more. The oxygen level maybe low and couild run around the high 80's to low 90's depending on how bad the seizure was and if they had stopped breathing for a long period after the seizure. These all return to normal relatively quickly except for the breathing and O2 level. These patients after a seizure will enter a Postictal phase after the seizure has stopped this postictal period can last up to many hours and early in this phase they do not breath well, have snoring respirations or no respirations depending on how bad the seizure was. If someone does not help them reight away, by keeping the airway open then they will die. Many patients do recover fully after a seizure and are fine by the time paramedics arrive, some require further assistance and need to be taken to hospital, especially the patients with long postictal phases. Postictal Phase is like a resting state patients with seizures go into after a seizure. Depending on how bad the seizure was, this phase may be many hows long.

all the things you asked for would vary on an individual basis there are no set parameters for vs after a seizure they vary person to person. yes it's possible for the person to have returned to a normal state before the paramedics arrive.you need to go to class and study more because whatever you are pursuing in the medical field requires you to have knowledge for the purpose that peoples lives depend upon you knowing what you are doing and it you may be the only person that can save that persons life based upon what you know
