I notice that most of the answers you are getting do not even address your question, so I will try to focus my answer on your question and the facts, rather than go into a lot of philosophical rhetoric.

These are current and represent the unprecedented Chinese buildup, where the PLAN is building and/or acquiring an amazing thirteen new modern major combatant classes simultaneously, with multiple copies of each ship being built, either simultaneously, or in series production. These classes include:

Type 051C, Shenyang Class DDG, new area air defense destroyers
Type 052C, Lanzhou Class DDG area air defense destroyer. Phased array radar, VLS. Aegis like battle management
Type 052B, DDG, Guangzhou DDG, general purpose guided missile destroyer
Proj 956, Hangzhou DDG, imported Russian Sovremenny destroyer
Type 054, Ma'anshan FFG, and the newer Type 054A general purpose guided missile frigate
Type 093, SSN, new nuclear powered attack submarine
Type 094, SSBN, new nuclear powered ballistic missile submarine
Type 039, Song class SSK, ddvanced diesel electric attack submarine
Proj 636, Yuanzheng SSK, imported advanced Russian Kilo diesel electric attack submarine
Yuan Class SSK, new advanced diesel electric attack submarine with Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) capabilities
Type 072-III, Large Amphibious assault ship
Type 071 LPD Very Large Amphibious assault ship
Type 2208, Guided missile Littoral Combat Craft, Advanced, stealthy, wave-piercing catamaran

In total, the Communist Chinese have produced over fifty new major combatants over the last few years, with upwards of thirty-five more currently building or being acquired, and more in line behind that. It is of significant concern when one considers the trend.

*Note........ This data is 3 years old. It has been updated on the sites given below. At this time however, it appears that China does have a capability of launching an amphibious assault on U.S. Soil. But there are many variables to that scenario for it to be successful on the part of China. First of all they would have to cross the entire Pacific Ocean without being detected. With such a large force that would be needed to establish a toe-hold on the U.S. it would be next to impossible. (This isn't 1941) It would mean that U.S. forces in Japan, The Philippines, South Korea and Midway would have to first be neutralized. Then it would require that China have enough carrier air-craft to obtain air superiority over the entire U.S. Air Force. Without these things being accomplished first it would be a disaster for China. Then even if some land forces were able to make it ashore, they would be faced with an enemy like no other. Nearly every household in the U.S. contains weapons. This was the major reason that Hitler went around Switzerland and didn't attack it during WWII. The cost in troop loses was calculated to be too costly. So it was avoided. China appears to be building up for something, but it is more likely to be for invading Taiwan, or some other smaller country. The result of a Chinese attack on the U.S. would most likely bring about a nuclear exchange that would devastate both countries and pollute the entire planet.

Yes they do have the capability. Here is there break down:
Amphibious Transport Dock (LPD)- 1 (which will be ready by 2010)
Landing Ship Tank Ship (LST)- 28 ships
Landing Ship Medium (LSM)- 2 ships
Attack Transport ships- 6 ships
Amphibious Warfare Craft- 88 craft

I would be more worried about these ships being deployed against Taiwan than the USA. Just don't let anyone fool you that a surface fleet engagement would be a walk in the park with the Chinese. Although the USN have far superior Cruisers (CG) and Destroyers (DDG) and 12 Carriers, the Chinese Navy is pretty advanced and kept up to date.

Its hard to say. They certainly do have some neat military technologies. And yes they are very secretive.

But one thing is for sure is that they have the technology to launch missiles at the US.

Did you hear about China's shooting down of a sattelite in space? That was a highly significant event.

From that, you could conclude that China indeed has a highly capable military.

Don't believe what you see in movies as in hucklebery's answer. Thier military is well equipped and well trained.

For the first time in trans oceanic war theory a country, like China, will not need a navy.all that is necessary is to begin an attack by blasting threw thousands of miles of our naval defenses with TND's and pow one hits our coast.Long after failed shots have created tsunami's two to three hundred feet high.So why invade a radioactive mud puddle? And worse than that, they, the Chinese, already own our country anyway. We probably owe them more than Taiwan. That may be our delima.

what percentage cases will you ask this question? Or do you only ask it even as your medicine runs out? certain, there have been no terror assaults on US soil interior the previous 6 years. yet considering there have been no terrorist assaults on US soil for better than seven years less than Clinton, you'll ought to assert he also saved us probability-free, properly? and considering you may't truly element to at least some thing Bush has carried out to keep us probability-free, you should probable end announcing this, properly? 9 million nicely-paying jobs? Care to outline nicely-paying, please? And an similar unemployment fee as we had less than Clinton is someway a triumph for Bush how, precisely? I do agree that he has restored the respect and dignity that the White domicile used to have. regrettably, that is the respect and dignity of the Nixon White domicile.

China doesn't need to attack the U.S.. With the spiralling increase in the U.S. foreign debt owed to China, and at the rate the Chinese are buying out American companies, it's just a matter of time when all of American businesses becomes Chinese. When that time comes, they will just have to invade with their CEO's, managers, and consultants to take over the business operations.

I will bet on that. Just give it about 15 to 60 years. We can start counting now...

Absolutely not. Dont care what secrets China has. Reality is we are thousands of miles away protected by the Pacific. It would just never happen, we would nuke them in the ocean to protect our land. Who would give a **** if America killed millions to protect thier borders from China? Even if they did who cares, they are invading.

No. Their ships would never make it across the Pacific ocean. It would be a turkey shoot and thoousands of chinese troops would drown as their ships were sunk. The only hope for the Chinese would be to get us in a land battle away from the U.S. i.e, Iraq, Iran, Taiwan...here they would be able to just overwhlem us with men and resources.

I do not know if China has this ability, but if China does - will you be in the amphibious craft launched onto American soil?

No same reason the US won independence from Britain. There was a sea, some countries prosper because of their geography.
