The best single malts I've ever had (and believe me I've tried dozens over the years to find a few I like) are Highland Park 12yr and Edradour 10yr. They're both really smooth and have a great after tastes.

If you don't mind (or even like) peaty scotches, Lagavulin 16yr is probably the best choice since its peatiness is pleasant but doesn't go overboard like Laphroig's.

It totally depends on your tastes and what is appealing to you, but I would try:

Highland malt:
Balvenie Doublewood (nicely rounded, full-bodied, very tasty)

Islay malt:
Laphroaig (smoky, peaty, briny. My favorite!)

Lowland malt:
Auchentoshan (light, crisp, citrusy)

Happy tasting!
