Join a local chapter of Toastmasters. It is a group that gets together to develop your skills as a public speaker. If there is no toastmasters in your area you can join other groups where you will have the opportunity to speak in front of the public.

If you cannot find groups like this where you can get up in front of real people then the next best step is to pactice at home. Get a recorder or microphone so you can record sound files onto your computer and practice interview answers. Then listen to your own voice and your own answers.

Listening to how you actually sound to people can be very helpful.

To improve communication skills, I have the folowing steps. Not in any particular order, but all are important.

1. Have a note book for improving your communication skills.
2. Start reading an english newspaper. Anything would be good. BUt i strongly recommend the international news that gets covered on either CNN, BBC etc. Do write a page of Synopsis on a daily basis what you remember reading from News paper. This has to be done daily.
3. Listen to CNN, BBC and listen to them for about 2 hours. Now that you have read the newspaper, you would be able to catch up what they speak.
4. See Documentatries of your interesting topic. Here also I would advice you to read three or four articles on that particular topic before you see the Documentaries. THe best way to figure out, is look at what is available in History Channel, Discovery couple of days ahead, and then catch up with your reading. Again you will connect with what is shown on the documentaries.
5. You need to TALK english. For this, you can not do this whom you know... To get a real good start, go to a place when you would get to meet and to talk strangers, who can talk english. Start a conversation, with a smile. GO talk anything. You can be the best stock broker in town, you can be the lost city visitor, you can be the hungry guy looking for a decent palce to eat, you can be the expert on a subject. Go ahead and indulge!!
6. Make COPIOUS NOTES of all these activities and the progress that you are making!!
6. Last but not the least, keep track of your progress on a daily basis, on two directions. One, the effort that you have put in to imporve your communication skills, two, how is your confidence level imporiving due to the ability to speak fluently. If there is no progress on the efforts front, turn around, get kick yourself. If there is no progress on the improvement, be patient. As long as the first thing is taken care, the second one would be automatically come.

One ADVICE - Communication Skills are actually an outcome of your SELF confidence. If you feel good about yourself, with in yourself, no body would care about your Communication skills. Coz anybody would like person with a positive drive, a vibrant smile and an intelligent mind. but if you are not confiednt by your lack of communication skills, then you would never be able to play your other cards such as a positive drive, a vibrant smile and an intelligent mind, that you already have.THerefore, you tend to lose the game, even before you begin it!!

My two annas for you!! :-)

Many schools offer classes in interviewing that you could take. Practice with friends, you can find lists of the most popular interview questions on-line, just Google it.

As for Phonetics you could take a voice and diction course, but more simply get yourself an International Phonetics Association Dictionary. Make sure you get the American English version, not the British English. And make sure it comes with a CD or some other device that lets you hear how each sound is pronounced.

Another thing to do is watch national news casters and imitate how they talk. They have all been trained in what is considered the American "neutral accent."
