Just speak from your heart and perhaps give a welcoming message to new members and to those that are continuing members thank them for coming also. How do you feel about the church your attending? Give some good points about the church and perhaps the music. Do keep it short though and just make people feel welcomed and glad that they came.

Too little information. But I guess that is good since speeches at church should be short.

Church is about being a disciple - try some of these on. God's speed.
DISCIPLESHIP
On January 1937, Frank Laubach opened his diary and wrote an amazing resolution, "God, I want to give You every minute of this year. I shall try to keep You in mind every moment of my waking hours." He then practiced "Thinking on God every minute," and recorded the percentage of the day he was able to accomplish such a prayer life.

An alleged incident at Atlanta Airport. The controller said, "Pam Am 407, you're cleared to land on runway B." Just a few seconds later, the same air traffic controller said to another pilot, "American flight 36, you are cleared to land on runway B."
Shocked, the first pilot immediately radioed, "Tower, this is Pan Am 407. You just cleared me to land on runway B and now you cleared American Flight 36 to land on the same runway. What are we supposed to do?"
After a long pause, the controller's voice came back on the air, "Well, u, y'all be careful now, ya hear."

A kite out of control ignited the Santa Ynez Mountains during one summer and the flames destroyed 234 luxury homes in Santa Barbara and damaged others with a property loss of over 23 million. The kite became entangled in the high power lines, causing them to short out with sparks falling on the dry tinder grass. The kite became entangled, experts suggest, because it lacked a tail as ballast. Sunshine Magazine commented: The kite, flying in the wind has a great lesson for each of us. Often we resent the cares and problems that hold us down. We want to be as free as a kite…but the kite that is entirely free will crash.”

Early in our space program, astronauts radioed NASA thanking them for the delightfully nostalgic music that was coming in over the satellite’s sound system. The people at NASA were stumped because they were not sending any music. All around the world, researchers began the search on radio and television to learn what had been broadcast at that hour of the day. Nothing matched. Then weeks later, after exhaustive searching, it was determined that the astronauts were hearing a program broadcast in the 1930s. What is the echo in your life?

The bald eagle is our national emblem…on our coins and the great seal of the country. They aren’t really bald, but get that appearance from the white feathers on their heads. They have wingspreads of almost 8’ and as they soar through the air, they appear most majestic. But flying isn’t that easy for them. They have a problem getting launched. Their secret is to perch on the edge of a high cliff or tree and wait for the right wind to come along. When it does, they let go and mount up, soaring with the current, higher and higher. It is their uncanny understanding of air currents that enables them to climb so high.

Duffy Daugherty, for many years the football coach at Michigan State U. tells of Dave Kaiser’s winning field goal against UCLA. The game was in LA and the FG gave them a 17-14 victory. As the kicker returned to the bench, the coach noticed the roaring enthusiasm of the kicker’s teammates and commented, “Nice going, Dave, but I noticed you didn’t watch the ball after you kicked it. How come?”
“You’re right coach. I didn’t watch the ball. I was watching the referee to see how he would call it. I forgot my contact lenses. They’re back at the hotel. I couldn’t even see the goal posts!” At first the coach was furious…. then he thought it over and changed his mind. Why shouldn’t he kick without his contacts? He was a disciplined kicker and had practiced for hours. He knew the angle and the distance even without seeing it. That is the discipline we need to follow as disciples.
An inquirer to Tertullian: I would be a Christian, but after all, I do have to live, don’t I? “Do you” the old man asked.

The same sun that melts wax hardens clay. The Lord’s discipline produces in some people sweetness and maturity and in others bitterness and regression. The reason: those who accept the pruning produce more and those who reject it grow sour grapes. EVERYDAY DISCIPLESHIP FOR ORDINARY PEOPLE

A year ago, an old violinmaker chose the wood for his instruments from the north side of the trees because he said this was the side that the fiercest windstorms beat on. At night when the storms came and the wind blew, the tree groaned under the lashing, but the craftsman didn’t feel sorry for them. They are simply learning to be violins.” DANIEL’S THREE DISCIPLINES J. Bragan

Many years ago, a young couple had their first child, a boy. As the boy began to grow, they noticed that he had a musical talent. He could play the violin. They began to try and find the best teacher for him they could find. They were told about an old Swiss maestro who used to teach, but was now retired. They took the boy to him and when he heard him play, recognized his ability, agreeing to teach him. The boy was just 8. For 10 years his teacher worked with him almost daily. Then came the time for his debut. His parents booked Carnegie Hall. The press and all the right people came. The lights dimmed and the boy came out on stage. From the very first note, he held the crowd mesmerized until the end. When he finished, the people stood on their feet and filled the hall with cheers and applause. Yet the boy ran off the stage crying. The stage manager yelled, “Get back out there. They love you. They are all cheering and clapping.” The boy replied, “There is one who is not.” The manager ran out on stage and came back quickly, “OK, one old man is not applauding. You can’t worry about what one old man thinks when the world loves you.” The boy replied, “But you don’t understand, that’s my teacher.”

A man attended a county fair and saw another person leading a fine, well-groomed horse. “Is that a saddle horse?” The other replied, “No sir. This horse will buck off a saddle. Nothing can stay on his back.”
“Is he a driving horse then?” the man inquired. “No, he was hitched up once and made kindling of the vehicle he should have pulled.”
“Well, what is he good for? Why is he here?”
The answer: “Style, man, style. Just look at the picture he makes.”Quote 9/85

I am a habit:
It is might hard to shake me;

I am habit.
Through each day, I slowly mold thee;
Soon my tightening chains enfold thee;
Then it is with ease I hold thee
I am habit.

Toynbee: A Study of History “Withdrawal and return:
When any civilization comes to a time of troubles, searching individuals will temporarily turn from the outer world of political and social chaos to the inner world of the psyche, coming there upon a vision of a new life and returning to the outer world to form the nucleus of a creative minority who will engage in genuine renewal as a result of their ethical mysticism.

There are two ways to get to the top of an oak tree: You can climb it or sit on an acorn. The last method takes longer and is more painful. Dr. R. Swanson

Processionary caterillars feed upon oak leaves. A scientist placed a ring of the animals on a flowerpot. Each caterpillar had its head abutting the rear end of the one ahead. They proceeded to go round and round the pot until they died of starvation and yet nearby was their favorite food. They couldn’t adapt.

When Whistler was at the height of his artistic career, a wealthy patron purchased one of his works on the condition that the artist would accompany him home and help select a spot for the picture to hang. Once at his mansion, the man held up the picture first here and then there, each time asking, “How about this?”
Finally Whistler said, “You are going about this all wrong. What you just do is remove all the furnishings from the room, hang the picture where it will be best displayed, and then arrange the furniture in relationship to the picture.” So it is with the days of our lives…they must focus around the presence of God.

Legend tells us that a zealous young man once went to St. Francis of Assisi and implored the saint to teach him how to preach. “Gladly, come with me.”
All afternoon, the young man followed Francis about, waiting eagerly for his lesson. They paused beneath a tree and Francis stooped to return a young bird to its nest. They went on and stopped in a field crowded with reapers and Francis bent his back to help load the hay onto a cart. From there they went to the town square where Francis lifted a bucket of water from the well for an old woman and carried it home for her. Each time they stopped, the young man was certain that a sermon would be forthcoming. But no words of great truth or wise discourse issued from the saint’s mouth. Finally they went into the church, but Francis only knelt silently to pray. At last they returned to the place from whence they had started, “But when,” the young man, now thoroughly perplexed asked, “are you going to teach me how to preach?”
Francis smiled, “I just did.”

When Father Alfred Delp was in a Nazi prison awaiting the mock trial that announced his execution, he wrote in his journal, “…This year now ending leaves behind us a rich legacy of tasks, and we must seriously consider how to tackle them. Above all else, one thing is necessary, -religious-minded people must become more devout: their dedication must be extended and intensified.” What tasks does the old year leave for you?

Pick a number between 1 and 10, double it, add 6, divide by 2 and subtract your original number. The number remaining is 3. The point is not the answer in this exercise. You already know the answer. Some years ago a tribe in Uganda had a sacred custom of allotting to each adult member of the tribe a tiny patch of land just outside the village. Each clearing has its own private path and is used as a place of prayer and meditation by its owner. Should someone become quarrelsome or overstep himself, he is reminded that the grass is growing on the unused path to his prayer place. GUIDEPOST 1/84
