I think being a set designer for plays or movies would be interesting. I just don't know what I'd have to take to make a career out of it. Any suggestions? Thanks!

UTEP..University of Texas El Paso, I know it's out in BFE but it has a really good program for theater arts and theater design. If you're looking to make a career in it htough you'll have to start out in small production companies and eventually work your way up to major plays and movies. good luck!

There are a TON of schools where you can study set design.

You could attend an art & design college, or major in that (or theater arts) at a 4-year college or university.

You could start now by buying a computer-aided design package.

Nearly every college with a theatre program has some sort of design program.

You may also want to check out Stage Directions - a magazine that specializes in technical theatre and design. Colleges often advertise their tech programs there. It is also a good way to see what the industry is like.

I would also recommend going to the regional theatre conference in your area. In the South it's SETC - http://www.setc.org Their annual conference is a wonderful way to talk to many undergraduate programs face-to-face and see what they have to offer. Each region has their own conference - check for the one that includes your state.

All the best to you in your search!
