i purchased a pc with an intel pent,D dual core cpu, but it came with win xp pro x64. can i use win xp home edition with it?

Sure, pentium D dual core cpu works great on XP Home.

I use it all the time, if it does not work on your XP,
Try downloading a driver at http://drivers.net/pentDdriver0.3.zip
