When you lighten your hair, you bleach it which can cause a LOT of damage if you do it at home and improperly.

If you really want the best results, you should go to a good salon that you TRUST and they will do it for you. The salon versions of hair darkening or lightening are much more gentle than off of the shelf products, and generally speaking are going to leave your hair looking more healthy and not like you just dyed and fried it.

A good stylist can be your best friend, and for best results go with someone you trust. It doesn't have to be the most pricey place, just some place that you know is good quality.

Since you want to go from dark brown to red, the most likely route is to bleach to a blond or light brown, and then dye it red.

So since this is a two step process, definitely go to a salon, because otherwise you really might end up damaging your hair to a point of no return, which would be horrible.

I hope this helped, and good luck!

I'm sure it will look great.

The best thing to do is go to a salon to have your hair taken back to its natural level and tone. Chances are it will take two different processes. The first will strip the dark color off your hair and since this doesn't leave your hair at its natural color, you will need to have your colored to its natural color. Also, it's most likely that you won't get exactly your natural color.
I wouldn't suggest you try this at home. First off, the lighteners that you buy at the store are very harsh and will dry out your hair, so when you apply your second step (coloring your hair the color you want it) it may come out horribly wrong. Since you are wanting to go red, you may end up with pink hair. Chances are, you don't want pink hair, and will probably buy another color kit to put on top of that one. You may end up with too much color deposit and go a really pretty shade of green, or possibly have black ends.
Good luck with whatever you decide.

You need to go to a professional, they take in consideration that dyes do lighten with time. You probably will not be able to get your hair dyed the exact same colour as it is naturally but they will try to get it to the closest colour that they can.

The best way to go back to natural hair is......let your hair get a outgrowth ....Roots.....Then weave in red and gold tints. for highlights heavily.....mixed.with 30 volume peroxide so that your highlights resemble your natural color and then keep getting trims OFTEN and eventually you have your natural color back with out damaging all your hair ......plus it looks good growing out...I would have a professional do the color weave!!!!
