I do not understand the exact meaning of "apprehend". For example, "He apprehended his friend's death in Iraq" does mean
he was afraid of his friend's death or he found his friend was dead? Or is there any other meaning?

Thanks guys but still doesn't ring a bell.
If "the police apprehended the suspect" does mean "the police arrested the suspect", not "the police was afraid of the suspect" or "the police understood the suspect", even though "apprehend" does mean "be afraid of" or "understand".

It is confusing. Can you please pick up any case that shows "apprehend" meaning "be afraid of" or "understand"?

Thank you again

Apprehend -- seized by. Took hold of the idea. Wrap your mind around it. Could not apprehend -- that is to say could not grasp or could not understand.

Or, I understand, but is that enough? St. Paul says "I count not myself to have apprehended." The Cat, said to be the ultimate master of karate, laid aside his red belt and started over with a white belt. Both these men were saying the same thing. They were telling us they sense something to be apprehended beyond the best we can know.

Most common for apprehend is to arrest to capture. And sometimes to even fear or dread or to have anxiety. Simply -- To take. To perceive.

Great word. How it can be used has yet to be exhausted.

The only definitions I know for apprehend are "arrest" or "capture".
Your example doesn't jive with either of those.
