Because a lot of people think that recieving a lot of smiles, meant just to be friendly, are signs that you like them, or perhaps they like you and will twist anything you say or do to them into something that means you like them back.
Also, some people spread rumors about people liking each other, so that could be a possiblity.
And some people are just vain and think everyone loves them.
Particularly if they have low self-esteem and are "popular."

It depends on body language i think. Might be your body language depicts such points which you might not notice but shows that you like the person
There could be another reason which is from my personal experience that the person you are talking or dealing is suffering from inferiorty complex and you try to kind which might be in your behaviour which makes the other person think that you like him/her.

Because, for some people its just EASIER for them to believe everyone likes them. Maybe its Vanity?
When for most of us, its hard to imagine anyone liking us.
