since surgery is being done, it seems it must be a severe hemorrhage with involvement of what is known as the macula (the part of retina most important for vision). most probably, vitrectomy with submacular or sub retinal clot removal will be done.

with diabetes, and those spots in front of eyes, she must have had vitreous hemorrhage due to a burst vessel of the retina. she must be getting vitrectomy done. it has good results, but i am surprised they wont explain to her properly. it is not ethical to do that. she might need laser photocoagulation too, after the surgery to get rid of the abnormal vessels in the retina, so that they donot re bleed. and a lot of care in controlling her diabetes, as she is quite young. sugar control is important, as the risk of retinal problems increases with the number of yrs of diabetes.
hope she gets well soon.

This link has some terrific info that you should share with your friend.
I do not believe that they will not give her any info. Not discussing the surgery with the patient would border on being negligent. She should be told about it and perhaps given information in the forms of pamplets.

try vitrectomy; they remove the vitreous fluid; scrape and peel the epiretinal membrane, repair holes, and inject a synthetic substance for the fluid removed. but the procedure itself is called a vitrectomy. good luck and i hope this helps.
