When they can sit still for 90 minutes without screaming, crying and otherwise irritating other paying customers.
Can your child sit through an entire Disney movie at home without getting bored? If he/she can then they will likely be able to sit through a movie at the theater. If not, then they aren't ready.

My son is now 11 but when he was 1, I took him to see Space Jam. It was midweek following a major snowstorm so we were totally alone in the theater. People expect to see kids at a kids movie. If he gets a bit vocal, just step out for a moment. This is a great time to learn how to behave in certain situations. If only some adults could get that lesson!!!!

Because we have older kids, we've always taken even the babies to the movie. We don't go very often, and we usually hit the dollar movies during the day so there are less people. Because they are raised 'practicing' proper movie etiquette, they behave much better, and we can take any of our kids over two years of age to a crowded theater.
Sometimes it does take a package of twizzlers to keep them busy, but they do well.
In fact, last time dh and I went to a movie, I was stunned by how rude the ADULTS were...talking on their cellphones, one was playing video games on his blackberry. The light and noise was astounding. It's ironic that people always complain about kids, but the kids I see are usually better behaved.

Why don't you try taking them to a drive in movie first? We took our kids from when they were just babies and they were able to sit in a theater without throwing a fit or anything! They do prefer going to drive ins though but we live in Ohio so we can only go on those great summer nights! We bring our own food, chairs, blankets it is so fun! Hope this will help you!

Depends entirely on the kid. Took mine when he was 3, but bailed 2/3 through when he got antsy. Best bet is to go to movie that's been out a while, so that you can sit in an area where there aren't likely to be too many other people around.

I started taking my child to the movies when she was 5 because they understand some of the movie's concepts and understand it then the younger kids.

Our son's first movie was Disney's "Cars", and he was about 2.5. He was captured by it and sat still the entire time! I was impressed especially since the movie is a full 2 hours, but he IS completely fanatical about cars, trucks, go-carts, anything with a motor on it.
He's 3 now, and would probably do ok in another kids movie, but we haven't taken him to any others.

My daughter was 3 when she started going to the theater. We made a deal that she would have to sit - listen - use a whisper, that kind of thing, and she did great. However, try a early afternoon matinée, so that if your child has trouble, it won't be as disruptive to others. Good Luck!

We started taking my son to the movies when he was three. They had to cartoon movies to keep his interest. But I think it depends on the child. Can your child sit through 2 to 3 cartoons without having to get up and move around if so they are probably ready.
