1 cigarette a day is too many. The effects of cigarettes smoking is 100 % harmful. There isn't a doctor in this world who would tell you that smoking is beneficial to your health. My friend's dad died from lung cancer which was attributed to smoking. It was an ugly death. He said that he wished that he had never started. He had been smoking 40 years! Everyone is going to die eventually, I personally feel that those people who smoke are going to possibly die at an earlier age. If possible, have your friend volunteer to help take care of a lung cancer patient at your local hospital. If they get a chance to talk to someone who is actually dying of lung cancer, they might change their way of thinking.

One is too many quite frankly. You can try to help someone realize that smoking is detrimental to their health and that isn't a good thing to do overall, but you can't help someone that doesn't want to help themselves. I've been trying on and off to get my mother to quit for years. She's convinced that smoking really isn't as bad for you as others make it out to be, and no amount of medical evidence presented to her by me is going to change it. At least not anytime soon. Good luck though.
