A recent question about the first growths got me to thinking that since I can't afford to buy a first growth, I'll just buy their second labels. I know the other four, but I just can't think of the name of Mouton's second wine.

Thanks for all the work, Renate, but I already know all of that. You did not read my question quite right.

Thanks, Brooke BB. Next time I'm in Manhattan I'll pop into Sherry Lehmann again. Last time I was there they were the only store that treated me like a human being!

Thank you, Scott O. I have several bottles of Carruades de Lafite 2000 that I'm patiently waiting to try. Did not get any 2005 futures but might snag a couple when they hit the shelves. Spectator rated the 2000 highly, but curiously I think Decanter only gave it 2 or 3 stars.

The second wine of Mouton Rothschild is Le Petit Mouton de Mouton de Rothschild. It has been made since 1993 from younger vines. In 1993 it was just called 'The second wine of Mouton Rothschild' and gained its current name in 1994.

I believe it is Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild but you should try Carruades de Lafite Rothschild and their south american counterpart LOS VASCOS, Grande Reserve

Trying to return the favor... is it Chateau Palmer "Alter Ego"? or Chateau Plince? You already had Lafite Rothschild, right? On my question? I could even guess Chateau Clarke at this point.

Long night...

Mouton Rothschild used to be a second growth but it was moved to a first in 1973

It is not that the domain (winery) grows more than on crop a year but instead how the crop of the domain is placed with the other crops of the other domains in France.

Depending on the year, Bordeaux first and second growths are very expensive.
