I'd recommend seeing a doctor. Muscle cramps are frequently associated with hypothyroidism, where your thyroid isn't producing enough hormones, among other things.

In the mean-time, some things you can try include eating bananas and drinking Gatorade. Both are high in potassium and minimize cramping.

Also, make sure you are hydrated - i.e. drinking lots of water and very little (or no) caffeine. If you drink nothing but caffeinated soda when you're thirsty, your body isn't getting enough liquids and that will increase cramping.

If you are absolutely addicted to caffeine, consider switching to green or black tea. Both have plenty of caffeine, but it's a type that's less harsh on your body and all the water required to make the tea will also increase your hydration. If you don't like how they taste, you can chill them and mix them with juice for better flavor.

If you can tolerate this, load sodium and calcium together. Like, buy soup or beef stew(they use sodium to preserve it) and drink milk. This is okay, might give you indigestion. The electrolyte chain works like this- Potassium causes muscle contraction, Sodium relaxes muscle, up one level, the calcium-iron balance regulates the balance between potassium and sodium. But by all means use Calcium!

I've heard that eating a banana takes the pain away instantly. Really! It's has something in it( potassium I think) that makes the cramps go away.

Absolutely yes. Foot cramps are derived from a multitude of causes- genetics, poor shoe and arch support, lack of hydration and shoe sizes that are too small. I strongly recommend visiting a podiatrist to fully analyze your symptoms. Best of luck!

If you are having these cramps while at rest or while sleeping its most likely a lack of potassium in your body, a lack of this will cause muscles to spasm without warning....eat a banana ; )

it seems like you get them when your staying still in one spot fr long periods of time (sleeping, sitting, cooking). maybe you should try moving around more often.

this could also be caused by an undelying condition. you may have poor blood circulation or a vitamin deficit. if its really bothering you, you should go to your doctor and have him/her run some tests.

Elena? When u get them, point your toe towards your knee., so that you are straining your hamstring. Seriously. It works, it straightens out the cramp.
