It's not just emo people that cut, and cutting isn't something that all emo people do. In fact, most people that cut aren't emo at all, but since they go out of their way to hide the cuts, most of the time you'd never know about it.
There are lots of reasons that people cut themselves. Some people do it to feel something, because they're so numb from past traumas. Other people do it to distract themselves from the emotional pain the feel, just like if you stub your toe and the slam your finger in the door you forget that your toe hurts. Some people (particularly survivors of sexual abuse) do it to make their bodies less attractive to potential predators. For other people it's about control - they feel like they have no control over their lives, and cutting gives them control over their body, and their experience of physical pain. It can also be a way of proving to themself that they're strong enough to do it. Sometimes it is to get attention, particularly among kids who may not be getting much attention at home (maybe because their parents are going through a divorce, a sibling is seriously ill, or their primary caregiver is abusing drugs or alcohol). There are some number of people who cut themselves just to fit in with the "emo" crowd, but these people definitely represent the minority of cutters. The vast majority of the time, there's something behind it other than that the person thinks it's just a cool or fun thing to do.

I still do not understand this emo sh*t, so why do you guys always have to put someone in some strange listing. Anyway yes any people that cut do it to get relief from something that is causing them a lot of pain, it can be from the pass. It is the only way at the time that they knew how to cope with it , so they cut, it is not the best coping skill, and in time they will find that it does not give them the same amount of relief that it use to, but it is the only coping skill they know, so they need to go and see a therapist and learn some healthier coping skills, but by that time they proably have been doing that for such a long time, they will go back to it every once in a while. But hopifully in the end they will not cut anymore, and have healthier coping skills.

I can say from personal experience that I don't anymore. When I was 15 I'd been raped and I started to cut my wrists to release the emotional pain inside of me. My friend told me about it and it did work so much so that it became an addiction for me. I wasn't looking for attention at the time, I just wanted the pain to go away. It's not a good habit to start and it's extremely difficult to stop. And I'm sorry I don't know what emo people are.

first off, cutters dont call themselves emo. i cut myself, and i am not emo... second of all, yes it does release pain, emotional pain that is. the physical pain takes their minds off of emotional pain. it also gives a brief sense of euphoria. when you hurt yourself, your body tries to heal itself automatically. the area which you hurt starts tingling and it makes you feel really, really good. it is a habit that is not easily broken. it is an addiction that is with you for the rest of your freakin life. its like the pringles commercial except in these words: once you cut, the fun dont stop. not saying its fun, but it feels good to the cutter. cutters often feel isolated and feel as if no one in the world can relate or knows how they feel. they often just need a shoulder to literally cry on. they are often very emotional people. they need mental help, because cutting is a mental addiction; such as alcoholism. please do not discriminate against cutters, make fun of them, or be mean to them. chances are they will cut worse and worse (because the first time you cut, you get a high. and then afterwards you have to cut deeper, and deeper, and deeper just so you can feel the pain) and they end up being suicidal and killing themselves. i know thats how i feel. all the time. no matter how much love i am shown.

My issue is with the use of the word "emo", "emo" refers to a group of ppl who listened to a specific band, i dont remember the name of the band, but the term was coined as a derrogatory term, and it has nothing to do with people who dress in black, or who are emotional!
Also, as someone who use to cut, cutting is something you do to feel a sense of control over your life, when nothing else seems to be under your control, it has been associated by many doctors, with bulimia and anorexia nervosa.

This behavior is referred to as SIB, or Self Injurious Behavior, they make a book(s) for it or several about the disease. Bloodletting/SIB is a mental form of inner cleansing when the release blood shed is similar to the release of anguish and pain.Controlling how much you bleed is significant to how much better you feel, it is control, it self infliction of pain for self gratification.
This is a very dangerous disease and it is hard to treat because everything that surrounds a patient can basically be used to harm in some way. It is a challenge, the only thing I can say is that if it is you or someone you know, you need to intervene, this doesn't get easier ever, its a matter of time, the cutting device contains bacteria and viruses it could send them into toxic shock and they could die or cutting the wrong artery/vein in a certain direction causes excessive bleeding and eminent death,
This symptomatic of mental health diseases this a recovering process which SIB lies doormat even during recovering, it sucks and please watch and gain knowledge this will kill

I'd say emo people express their emotions (that's why its called 'emo' - duh)
People who cut usually have trouble expressing their emotions and hold them in. Cutting is another way of dealing, instead of feeling your feelings.
So lay off the poor defenseless emos.
(Besides 'Hug an Emo Today' day is coming up soon)

There are many theories about this issue. Here is the one I believe, they are looking for attention because they feel so much emotional pain and are confused about it. We are taught we are not hurt until it can be physically seen and we can pour our hearts out to someone, but they don't feel like anyone gets it. Cutting is a way of expressing pain and it does sometime help them let some of their emotion out letting them feel relief. If you know someone doing that, they really need help because cutting can go too far and get out of control and the person could end up dead or hurt. I know people who are 30 years old and proffesionals that need to hide their scars. Remind them these scars will haunt them for life.

Cutting releases endorphines, a chemical in the brain that makes you feel good. It's also a way of releasing feelings of anger, depression, anxiety, and other negative feelings. If you know any one who does this, its a good idea to get them some counseling.
