Why are the museums in Italy closed on Mondays? I was in Florence the past summer on a once-in-a-lifetime trip, but they said since it was Monday the museums weren't open..?? Pissed because I didn't get to see the Statue of David or the Ufizzi gallery....

Not all the Museums in Italy are closed on Monday.
However it's true that both the Uffizi Gallery and the Academy Gallery (where is the statue of David) are closed on Monday and also Jan.1st - May 1st and Dec.25th -
I know that the main reason is because they're on a limited budget; they're not private museums and it seems the Italian Government, to limit expenses, has put a limit to the number of museums attendants that are less than necessary.
Therefore there is no people enough to replace who needs to rest (once a week) and then in these 2 Museums,as well as a lot of others, it has been chosen the Monday as the closing day.In addition to this I want you know that also a few halls of the Uffizi are not open to the public due to the fact that, for the same reason, the number of attendants is not enough to guard all the rooms. I agree with you that's annoying but mostly of the tourists visiting Italy are aware of this and plan their Mondays to visit open museums (there are a lot not closed).
Probably Italy has too many places that need to be controlled...!!
I wish you may have the opportunity to go back to Florence (not on Monday..!!) and visit these 2 museums since they're an absolute must.

very sorry... I really don't know the reason why, but it's always been that way...
hope you have the time to come to Florence once again, so you can see our museums. (don't forget the Bargello Museum, it's great!)
