I am part Irish and me and my brothers all have Irish names. My Brothers name is Sean which in an English translation would be equivalent to "John." My other brother Shamus would be equivalent to "James."

My name is Shannon. What would the equivalent of my name be in the English language?

Shannon comes from the River Shannon, the longest river in Ireland. It is the 20th most popular girl's name in Ireland.

The name has an old Irish form Siannan. It is the name of a river in Ireland as someone already said but it is also related to Sequana the name of the ancient Gallic (or Gaulish) river goddess on the European mainland. The Seine and Saône rivers in France are named after her. Archeologists have found many votive offerings in the Seine river from about 2,000 years ago that were dedicated to her.

Shannon itself is actually more of an American Irish name, like Kelly, rather than an Irish Irish name (There are some differences between the two peoples) so if it exists in Ireland it is probably rare and relatively recent. Traditionally, most people in Ireland have given their sons and daughters very religious Catholic names like James, Joseph, Eugene (Aoghann, Owen), Michael, Anne, Kate, Bernadette, Mary, Noreen, Sheila (Julie) etc. so Shannon would sound a little quaint to most of them as a girl's first name.
