dont know how old you are but what you worrying about ? 4-5 hours is long enough, if your mind and body dont need it then that is ok. there is no set time for how long we should sleep. Sometimes I manage from just 2 hours a day. Stop worrying and enjoy what you get babe. Ok the experts say we need 8 hours a day but do they know everything, if you working ok off what you get be happy. Just think 8 hours is a third of your life, enjoy it babe you getting more out of life than most people.

Sleep is crucial to mental and physical health. I have had problems with insomnia and sleep deprivation my entire life and something that my doctors noticed early on was the less I slept or the poorer the quality of my sleep was the more pain I was in both emotionally and physically. The few times I've been hospitalized have all been after periods where I would survive on 2-5 hours of sleep each night *usually closer to 2*. I've been told that if you sleep less than 4 hours then you never make it into REM sleep...which is a different type of sleep deprivation all together. Sleep is when your mind and your body hit the reset button and heal themselves. Without it everything starts to crumble. I personally have bipolar II and anxiety issues as well as a physical pain disorder. When I get the right amount of sleep and eat well I don't require any medications at all anymore. I'm not saying that you don't need medicine because I used to need it to (and would have probably died without it) but I am saying that sleep is just that important. Without enough good sleep your medication won't work as well as you'd like simply because no pill can give you instant rest. Tell your doctor that you don't feel you sleep enough. Talk about how you feel when you wake up. Tell them everything even if you don't feel it's relevant. There are certain medicines that help you stay asleep better and some that help you get to sleep. I personally take Ambien on occasion when I'd fallen into a bad cycle simply to reset my sleep habits. Talk to your doctor. Sleep is essential for good health of any kind.

to add a comment to something someone said on here, anti depressants can make you not care about anything, but then you are on too high a dose. You could be one of those people who doesn't metabolize drugs properly because you lack a certain liver enzyme, genetically, then you need to take a lot lower dose than most. i bet that's what happened to that person who said she wouldn't care if someone died- she was being overdosed.
Your depression is probably causing your sleepless nights. That is a common symptom of depression (I go the other way, sleep way too much)
Good luck!! Hope the doc can help!! Hope you can see a psychiatrist and not just a family doc.

I am going through the same thing I just posted a question about it myself, I do take meds for sleep I use restoril/temazepzm, ambein, I have tried a calming tea by AZO, I also tried natural vitamins as well, Your body will react to these things in its own way, I do need meds at times, most times but my life has been a train wreck, you can also get meds for your mental health some of them will address your insomnia,
I do highly suggest seeing a psychiatrist first , if you see your family DR, keep in mind he isn't a mental health specialist he is a doctor who can temporarily aid you in this bout, you need to sit and write everything you feel on paper, psychologically, psychically, take to a psychiatrist if you have a good feeling bout him then trust his advice.
Keep in mind that if these meds make you feel worse discontinue, some people have defiency chemically perhaps you lack dopamine, vs sartonin, if your Dr gives you something make sure it is helping increase that which you lack. You will see start researching dont diagnose yourself

Start with the anti-depressants first - hopefully when they kick in and begin to lift your mood, you should find that your sleep pattern improves too. Depression can cause problems with your sleep, so concentrate on beating the depression first and see what happens. Good luck.

I used to suffer from the same thing. I had depression and really bad insomnia. My doctor gave me both anti depressants and sleeping pills. There are a lot of anti depressants out there that also help you sleep. I took remeron it really helped for both.

I tried anti depressants for a short period in my life. It didn't work. You could watch a murder take place in your presence and not care or distinguish that from buying a newspaper. You need to approach your problems by dealing with them head on. Drugs are clearly not the answer. A doctor can give you lots of drugs, but he or she wont solve your problems... Your looking for relief and I understand that. You can get that relief by addressing your problems, defining their importance and fix them one at a time. Sleep will come with your attempts to correct the problems in your life. Your body will shut down and sleep will come as you stop worrying so much about life and the things that you are being dealt. Peace be with you.

first the doctor will have to evaluate if you have depression. then depending on what you have the doctor can prescribe with a certain med.
some meds will contraindicate eachother so the doctor will have to choose carefully which meds to give you.

um? You could just try getting more sleep.
Sometimes not enough sleep can make people depressed.
Sometimes depressed people feel like they don't sleep enough.
Talk to your doctor about everything.
