The prophet Mohammed was acquainted with Christianity and may have been quoting Jesus, whom he recognised as a prophet:

Matthew 18:21 Then Peter came up and said to him, "Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?" 22 Jesus said to him, "I do not say to you seven times, but seventy times seven. 23 "Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. 24 When he began to settle, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. 25 And since he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. 26 So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, 'Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.' 27 And out of pity for him, the master of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. 28 But when that same servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii, and seizing him, he began to choke him, saying, 'Pay what you owe.' 29 So his fellow servant fell down and pleaded with him, 'Have patience with me, and I will pay you.' 30 He refused and went and put him in prison until he should pay the debt. 31 When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their master all that had taken place. 32 Then his master summoned him and said to him, 'You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. 33 And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?' 34 And in anger his master delivered him to the jailers, until he should pay all his debt. 35 So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart."

For the answer to your question i think we need to refer to Jewish culture as that is the culture that Jesus was speaking in. In Jewish culture, certain numbers symbolise certain concepts. The number seven represents perfection, completeness, and 70 x 7 means infinity.

Jesus seems to equate perfection with forgivness, because he also said:

Matthew 5:43 "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48 You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

He also said something similar to the parable that he told after what he said about forgiving 70 x 7 times, in the context of teaching his disciples to pray the prayer which includes the lines "forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors". After teaching them the prayer he went on to say, "For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses" (Matthew 6:14-15).

So, in Jesus' teaching, you must be perfect in forgiveness, like God who forgives and who blesses both the good and the bad. You must take every opportunity to forgive.

I guess this doesn't go for adultery and stealing huh?
Someone can say something, but if they do not do it, then it means nothing.
Jesus said seventy times seven (Matthew 18:21), and what he mean't was that we were to forgive a lot. He also told us to
Forgive and you shall be forgiven. -Luke 6:37
There was no and if and buts about what Christ said.

Well, if someone does something to you 490 times that they need to be forgiven for, maybe you should not hang out with them. The bible says keep no record of wrongs, and as such the seventy times seven refers to an obscene amount of forgiveness. Those technical enough to keep track of that many "I'm Sorry"'s have larger problems to deal with.

It means always. How many times do we need to forgive? 7 times a day? Not seven but seventy times seven a day, meaning always, you need to forgive always.

Notice how few people actually answered your question with the number 490? Christians don't believe in standard math. They use a new method called "Intelligent Counting." Seventy times seven means whatever they want it to mean, so long as it disagrees with the atheistic liberal darwinist secular satanic sciencemongers who want to destroy Jesus and burn the Bible.

In the Bible, the number seven stands for completeness. Like: full, total, 100%, never ending..... Seven, meaning complete times another seven number (70) means as listed above.. All, full, total. Creation is 7 days, the Israelites marched around the city 7 times then the walls came down. Seven horns, seven lamp stands, etc.are all mentioned in the book of Revelation. Hope this helps...

This is a reference as to how many times you should forgive others for hurting you, betraying you, etc. Obviously there is no real limit (seventy times seven) as to how many times you should forgive someone, the point of this passage is just to say that you should constantly forgive, as God does! :)
