For those who don't know, a CODA is a Child of a Deaf Adult. I have been hired to teach this kid to read, but i'm not sure how to teach him. He didn't get read to in the "traditional" (hearing) way, he was signed to. He is hearing, just to clarify. How can I teach him to read phonetically, not just by rote. If you've had experience with this kind of situation, I really need your help. Thanks!

Since the child you are working with is a native signer, he no doubt has a strong visual orientation. CODAs usually think in sign language, and he may have a greater than usual bent towards mentally processing information iconically and wholeistically. Your first task, then, is to develop both linear processing skills and phonemic awareness in SPOKEN language prior to teaching him phonic decoding skills. Basically, you're going to have to "catch him up" in these areas by giving him some heavy doses of what he has missed.

I would start out by teaching him rhymes. I would use nursery rhymes, age-appropriate children's poetry, and maybe some jazz chants and jump-rope rhymes. I would start out just letting him enjoy hearing them, then helping him learn them. I would add in some children's songs with a strong rhyme pattern, and help him learn them.

As I went along, I would point out the rhyming words and ask him to come up with other words that rhymed. THEN I'd start having him go through catalogues and find pictures of things that STARTED with the sounds of each of the vowels and consonants and cut them out.

Also, if you can sign, teach him English words that do not translate directly into ASL, but explain their meanings in ways that can handily be visualized in signs. This will get him used to thinking of English words as "handy short-cuts" to concepts that have to be explained through some involved circumlocution in ASL. Your goal is to get him to practice extrapolating more involved meanings from words as opposed to finding words to apply to whole concepts or mental pictures. Both skills are needed for communication, but the first skill is needed for reading words.

Finally, while visually-oriented "sight" methods are a very poor choice for most kids, he is probably a visual learner and would do fine with more of "top-down" approach. You can write out a rhyme or use "big book" stories with a lot of repetition and point out the phonic elements as you go along, then expand from there.

Hope it helps!
