By being decent to people and ignoring those who are not. Be realistic about who you are talking to as well. If it is the internet remember they can say anything on here and it may or may not be the truth. If in person you can read a persons body language to know the meaning of the words they are saying. Listen to what is being said and you will know who to talk and who not to.

There are a lot of decent people out there but there is also a lot of sickos too. Just ask a safe question, like you have, and see who answers decently or like a wacko. This should give you somewhere to start.
