The first person who answered has a good answer! Sure they have great martial arts, and discipline (a prerequisite)...but they tend to be somewhat fanatical...the movies you have seen probably portray them as great heroic patriots. There is no glamor in the life of a Buddhist Monk, especially a Shaolin.

The monks today do not train in the same disciplines as they did years ago under Abbot Gee Shim. Back then there were only a few "kung fu forms" and the conditioning was more vigorous. Nowadays Monks practice a lot of wushu (more acrobatic).

Bad motorscooters. I've seen boards broken across throats with no ill side effects.

But then, I'm a smidge biased. I study northern shaolin long fist. Of course, I've put on twenty pounds of muscle in six months, without gaining any inches (anywhere!). My muscle is just getting denser. I have muscles in my forearms that, even when relaxed, are nearly as hard as bone.

I one were to go through this training for eight hours a day, instead of the paltry three that I put in, and do it for twenty years, I imagine one would undeniably be a bad motorscooter.

The Internal martial arts are merely a tool.

This tool is used to develop: self control, self discipline, insight,
self knowledge and wisdom.

Shaolin monks (or anybody else who has dedicated their life to
self exploration and self mastery) are worthy of respect, honor
and imitation. The methods that they use are difficult and
require a great deal of time to master.

Just because the methods can also be used for self defense
does not mean that this is their primary function.

contrary to popular opinion the shaolin monks are not the same as they were a 100 years ago or more.and any one who thinks they just hide in a monastery and train is only fooling themselves.in case you dont realise this is 2007 not 1807.and there not and never have been warriors.as the name suggests they are religous monks.duh!

they are amazing people...i dont know how they do it...ive been training in tae kwon do for about 9 years and i could only hope to be half as disciplined as they are in my lifetime...watch some of their demostrations, goes to show you that people can do anything if they have the right mind set.
