Or will some of them get into heaven just because they are so smart and amazing. They have spent years in study and have come up with their beleif system based on the facts, so there is no way that they can be wrong. But then they died, only to discover that they were wrong. Will God forgive them? After all, aren't good intentions worth something?

I got BINGO again, twice in one night. We need to make this game more challenging.

Seriously, though, your question makes no sense. If there was no way for them to be wrong, then how could they turn out to be wrong?

I don't think God will forgive them. Bertrand Russel, the atheist was asked the same question and he said he will plead his case because he was not given enough evidence to prove that God exists.
The problem with that kind of logic is God wants us to make that leap of faith. Faith with all the answers is not faith. When we decided to get married we also did not have all the answers about our spouse, but we went ahead with it just the same. It was an act of love. Belief and acceptance of God as our Lord and Master requires the same thing.
Honestly, though I believe God has given us more than enough proof to believe in him. That's why he sent Jesus to us so that we can believe he exists. What human has been able to:
Silence a typhoon?
Walk on water?
Multiply a few loaves of bread and a few fishes?
Restore dead people back to life?
Give sight to people born blind?
Change water into wine?
Rise from the dead?
As John puts it, these miracles are signs of his divinity. It shows Jesus has the power over life and death and the forces of nature. Only a God can do that.
And if all these miracles were just made up, Christianity would not be around today. For example, the story of his resurrection cannot be silenced because more than 500 people witnessed it.
Have a grace filled day

As a christian I think that if God is going to send all atheists to hell, then I don't want to go to heaven. God or not, just cuz people don't believe in something doesn't mean that they're bad people. They shouldn't be punished for believing what they want to believe. Diversity is what makes us such wonderful creatures, so why should we all have the same ideas about religion? To those saying atheists will go to hell, do you seriously believe that the Lord is so judgemental; even though, as christians, we are taught that it's wrong to judge people? I don't. I'm pretty sure that God will understand, because he created us so that we were each different and each had different ideas. So, if atheists really are going to hell, it's God's fault. I'll prolly go to hell for the large amount of blasphemy in this response, but if that's the case, then so be it.

Dear Josh,

I can see by your profile that you have joined Y!A only a
short while ago. The question you pose is one that is asked
many times. The response that you have received is very
typical.

Let me tell you a bit about C.S. Lewis.

In his book "Surprised by Joy" a leading atheist and one of
the most brilliant minds in England during the past
century, C.S. Lewis (The Chronicles of Narnia), talks about
something he calls "The Hound of Heaven" that constantly
pursued him. The more he tried to shut out the idea of God,
the more this "Hound" pursued him, and the more angry he
became. Finally he could stand no more. In his own words
“I became one of the most reluctant converts in England.” It
was then that a most unexpected thing happened. He was
flooded with true Joy. This book has been on the best
seller list for about fifty years.

I suspect that many of those atheists that you refer to,
are being pursued by "The Hound of Heaven" right now.

I will leave it to God to be the Judge, (Matt. 7:1)

What does He want me to do. Isaiah 61:1,2 tells us.

1 The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me,
because the LORD has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners, [a]

2 to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor
and the day of vengeance of our God,
to comfort all who mourn,

Since you are the one that posed the question, and God has
shown you several that are being pursued by the "Hound of
Heaven", will you pray for those people fervently for at
least one day? I hope that your question was not an
intellectual exercise only.

God bless you in that effort

Bryan

Faith is not just based on facts. Sometimes it requies believing even tho the facts say otherwise. There is always the chance that they are wrong!! The only unforgiable sin is unbelief. Getting into heaven is not based on actions or good intentions. Otherwise we are all stuffed. You say that they are smart and amazing but others would think the opposite. That is a matter oif opinion.

All the fundies can call me an agnostic for saying this, and in a moment of anger I'll probably be a Christian hypocrite by controdicting what I'm about to say somewhere down the road, but we just don't know, dude. It is un-Christian to judge another man's faith. Those who have all the answers, mostly hermit-monks on Mount Athos and in Ethiopia, aren't telling, and those who tell, mostly Televangelists who want your money, don't really know, but delude themselves into thinking they know. Skepticism is as much of a virtue as faith, but they need to keep each other in balance, except when it comes to science and theology. Skepticism has no business meddling in theology and faith has no business meddling in science.

. The Bible tells us that God has clearly revealed Himself in nature (Romans 1:20) and in the hearts of people (Ecclesiastes 3:11). The problem is that the human race is sinful; we all reject this knowledge of God and rebel against Him (Romans 1:21-23). Apart from God's grace, God would give us over to the sinful desires of our hearts, allowing us to discover how useless and miserable life is apart from Him. This He does for those who reject Him (Romans 1:24-32).
the problem is that they have rejected what they have heard and what is readily seen in nature. Deuteronomy 4:29 proclaims, “But if from there you seek the LORD your God, you will find him if you look for him with all your heart and with all your soul.” This verse teaches an important principle: everyone who truly seeks after God will find Him. If a person truly desires to know God, God will make Himself known.
The problem is, “there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God” (Romans 3:11). People reject the knowledge of God that is present in nature and in their own heart, and instead decide to worship a “god” of their own creation. It is foolish to debate the fairness of God sending someone to hell who never had the opportunity to hear the Gospel of Christ. People are responsible to God for what God has already revealed to them. The Bible says that people reject this knowledge, and therefore God is just in condemning them to hell.

I hope there is an afterlife.....even hell would be preferable to becoming fertilizer........but I also hope to win the lottery...that hasn't happened either. I have ABSOLUTE faith that IF there is a God....he has a much better sense of humor....and is a lot more tolerant....than most of his followers. I can't see a God of love and mercy sentencing someone to an eternity in hell for not recognizing his over lordship. If God is like that....I don't want to be around him/her/it anyway.

No one can answer the question!
Those who do, are putting themselves above GOD!
It is God, and God alone, who will make the judgement.
So all of the Megalomaniacs who think they know better than God, had better start repenting, NOW!

I can't see God condeming anyone who is a Good person to hell. I wonder how many Christians will make it there!

There is no way that any human can judge whether another human will go to heaven or hell; it is not our place. Any Christian (or anyone at all, for that matter) who declares that someone is going to hell is full of it. God knows our hearts and our intentions, and that is that. All we can go off of is the Bible, but that still isn't an invitation for people to butt in and say whom God is choosing for heaven.
