it is a muscle spasm; when you get it, if you can pull your big toe back toward your knee cap. it will ease the cramp; and i believe that charlie horses or cramps in muscles is from a deficiency of either iron or calcium maybe. i wouldn't suggest overdosing on these though until you check with your doctor or research that further; iron can be fatal in high doses and calcium can cause kidney stones if its in excess. so a multi vitamin a day should be ok; but i wouldn't take anyting that has iron unless i know my hemoglobin is low.

Plantars faciitis. It's a painful sharp pain. The tendons in the feet are stretched out (think of pulling a rubber band) I am a long distance walker and have been so for many years. I had to stop walking hills and hiking. I finally had surgery after years of shots for pain , icing, exercising my foot. I feel better, but, not the same. I won't be able to walk long distances, hills or climb and I must use cushioned inserts and special shoes. It's the way it is. You accept it and deal with it. :)

How old are you - maybe close to 50, or older?
Are you overweight?
Do you do a lot of running, play a lot of tennis, racquetball, basketball, or other sports where you're on your feet and running hard a lot?
If you answer yes to any of these, you may have strained the tendons across the bottom of your foot. Lift that foot up on your other knee, put both thumbs on the bottom of the foot, and wiggle your toes. Feel those tendons move? Does that make it hurt a bit?
When it happened to me, my doctor told me to get some gel inserts at the pharmacy and put them in my shoes. It made a wonderful difference. Go spend about $8-10 for a pair of these, and see if they help.

Check the arch to see if there any lumps little bumps appearing, from the inside out. These are planters wort's and they hurt like hel_! If you get them go to the Dr. and be sure to have them numb your foot before they remove them! If it's not that i don't now try getting arch supports for your shoes and seeing if that will help you any.

I would recommend looking up plantar fasciitis. You have a tendon that runs from your heel up through the arch of your foot. It can get irritated and be very painful.

If the pain is too much or way too constant, you should definetely go check yourself to a physician.
