just walked up to you and said "hey, wanna go to the movies with me this weekend?" or would you rather have him work it into a conversation? If so, how can it be worked into the conversation without being super obvious (ie "so, seen any good movies lately?")

Work it into the conversation. Because I like that they've tried not to be impulsive, working it out is smooth...<3
But he must be sure that we've had enough time, beginning the conversation with asking if I can stay and if I have time is a good hint to let the girl keep in the back of her mind. And then when the request for a date finally comes it's a little "oh I knew it" surprise.
