Basicaly which bicycles are best, second hand. I need dependable transportation on the cheap.

There are many bikes out there in the second hand market. If $200 dollars is your limit I would go for condition rather than brand. There are many that have spent their life in a garage, rarely used.
Things to look for
Make sure it will fit you
Slop in rear derailleur (if it is worn it won't change well)
Rub marks in the front derailleur. (less scuff marks means little use.)
shape of teeth on chain wheel and cluster (wear is obvious)
look at the spokes high mileage will show as an obvious divot in the spoke wear it contacts others.
When you find one in good nick get it serviced. If it has been sitting around for a while it will benefit from new grease.

For $200 you can get a reliable used mountain bike - try craigslist in your area. You can get more for your money with a MTB or hybrid than with a road bike (a $200 road bike is usually pretty old or in need of parts). If you want to use a mountain bike for commuting, I would suggest getting some inexpensive "city" tires since they offer less resistance than knobby mountain bike tires. Trek, Specialized, Fuji, and GT are some brands that come to mind. You will probably also get the bike checked by a bike mechanic if you buy a used one from a private party.

I sold my old GT MTB for $100 on craigslist. it was a great deal.
if youre into a new bike, then good luck finding anything at $200 that is even remotely classified as 'good'. for that, youll have to shell out quite a bit more.

hi ms. you came to the right place,cause i am selling my bike ,i seldom use it and its really taking up space. its a red and chrome bike ,model type schwinn. when i got it,it was $375 dollars.dont worry about its condition ,its in A 1 shape(girls bike).schwinn biks are noted as being the cadillac of cycles

just transportation? trek is good.. mountain off roading.. specialized and iron horse are my fav.
