I think it does. I have tried lots of different anti-depressants and even though sometimes I feel well on them, I know that I would feel better if my circumstances were better. I honestly think that the anti-depressant I'm on now is a good one, but it can't change my circumstances. You know what I mean? It can't take away my chronic pain, it can't give me friends, it can't make me physically well enough to drive and go places, it can't take away my eating disorder, and it can't make my family well either. So it may be a good anti-depressant, but until my circumstances change, I won't ever be happy.

It can. Many types of depressive disorders are caused by chemical imbalances in the brain. When you have an imbalance going on, and you also have a lot of personal crises, then you find yourself less able to cope.
That is why it's important to combine chemical therapy with psychotherapy- a good counselor can keep an eye on how you are progressing and work with a psychiatrist and pharmacist to learn the best med or combination of meds for you.
Unfortunately, they can't look into our brains and see how best to treat us. People respond to these types of medication very differently, and sometimes it takes a trial to find the best fit.
Another problem- these meds are not meant for very long-term use. They are supposed to be of about a year's duration- the idea is that by correcting the chemical imbalance, the cells in the brain will "learn" how many receptors are needed and produce just what is needed and not overdo. Receptors act by by releasing neurotransmitters when triggered by a stimulus, and also act to recycle transmitters and "put them away" or store them when the stimulus (trigger) is gone.
Because it takes a while to "teach" your brain about the receptors, it takes several weeks before you see improvement, and a few months before you see significant improvement. There really isn't a quick fix. And the type of problem dictates the type of solution.
Making your way back from a depressive episode isn't easy- and it seems like when you can least handle life issues. that's when life throws a few at you. Like most things, it does take hard work and perseverance. No one wakes up one day and says "wow, I feel better!" It's more like after some weeks you notice you are dealing with things a little better, or you made it through the day without crying. That's the point where you know the hard work was worth it. Good luck and keep trying. You are definitely worth it, and the people who love you would agree. I hope things turn around for you, and that happiness will find you.

I am taking anti-depresents and anxiety medications and i have been taking them for 14 years now. I wish I didn't have to take them but i need these medications and without them i am not a good natured fun to be around nice person. So I choose to take my medications and make me happy & safe and the people around me happy & safe. You need to decide this in your mind that you want this to happen for this to happen and then it will be able to take place and work it's way, if you are not willing to let it in and give it a try then you are fighting it and there is no point, until you have reached the day you decide you are ready. Then you will be ready to accept the anti-depressents and what they have to offer you.

I take antidepressants, but I also speak with a therapist on a regular basis to learn coping skills. I think that depression can linger in some people if they are relying on the medication alone.
