From experience go to microsoft site through update link in your web browsers help menu and validate your windows program. After doing this your downloads will work. Media player 11 if you have a firewall on it could be blocking your down load as well if you have already validated your windows program.

Might be a corrupted file, you will probably need to go into the registry to clear out any remanents of old files.

You may also need to run a windows update and then download media player. Which media player are you downloading? Try downloading a slightly older version then upgrade to the latest.

There are possibilities in addition to the ones already mentioned by other answerers....perhaps you have spyware or need to disable the firewall briefly to let it download?

.
The newest version of MS Windows Media Player will not download if you have a "questionable" version of Windows XP:
If it interprets your XP installation as "pirated" it will not download.
However, the older version of WMP
WILL still work fine.
You can still get the older version of WMP at their site.
