I dunno if there are drive through places like the one near my house, but I was wondering if anyone knows proper etiquette for a drive through. They carry beer, snacks, soda, candy, etc.and we just pull in and tell them what we need. They bring it to the window, take your cash and bring change. My question is, do I need to tip? The guys do alot of walking as it is a fairly long drive-through and it looks like a job that is very cold in the winter and very hot in the summer. There are no tip jars or signs saying tips are accepted, nor have I seen others tip, but tonight one of the guys didn't bring our change (it was only about $1.75) and looked confused when we just sat there. He was a new guy and none of the other workers ever kept our change. I felt stupid when he was like "Oh...you want your change?". So was he expecting a tip? What do you do at drive throughs? It's not like McDonalds so what is expected?

Ugh, I just hate it when people automatically assume you're letting them keep the change. I used to wait tables for many years and lived for tips, but I WOULD NEVER assume such a thing.

And if you want to tip anyone, that is your business and I am sure it would be appreciated. But under no circumstances should that guy have kept the change without being told to do so. I would have to say no tip for him, just for being so rude!

I never thought about it but if they do something great or tell you about a special go for it. As for the guy who didnt bring your change I would have sat there and said yes....Expectating it is way wrong.

I would say keep the change would be an good way to 'tip' them. Just think you would tip after every beer at a bar so why not a few dimes for the entire case!

In these situations, ask yourself if you think he deserves a tip. Tipping these days has become too much of a formality. the fact that you have to ask how much to tip is the problem. tipping used to be a simple way to say "thank you." Now it's just a percent based on the job done- a "tax," more or less. Just take a look at the situation, and if you think someone deserves a little extra, then give it to them. don't overthink it.

Sounds like he obviously expected a tip but Ive never heard of tipping a drive thru guy. If you feel like theyre doing you a service by walking a couple feet to get your gatorade, then feel free to tip,but dont forget they still get their pay. They earn what theyre worth.

In my opinion .....when someone comes to ur home to make a "delivery" ....then that is classed as a SERVICE ...so tipping is polite ...as many of them use their own cars and it does help for gas!!

On the hand - at Mc.Ds or other drive throughs ...staff should not accept tips ...they are paid to work on drive through shifts! We use our own cars to get our own food !
Hope this helps !!

I've never heard of tipping someone at a drive-through, but it's not a bad idea. If nothing else, the person you tip will have a good day. :-)

If it's a quarter or so I tell them "keep the change." After all, I don't go to the drive in store every day, and if it gives me convenience, I'm willing to give the guy a little money.

my advice....get a little "exercise" (or a workout, as the case may be) and get out of the car and walk your a s s around the store to retrieve your own junk food.

If that sounds too daunting, then yes, by all means, throw the poor guys a few bucks..

Tips are not customary but the fast food line is bad for your health; so do you want insult upon injury ? by the way if you are concerned did you vote for minimum wage raises it's one fifth of what it should be and yet there has never been an economically poor reprsentative elected that I recall is this really a democracy at work or a pentocrasy by deceit?

Sure wish a place like that was by my home! I would tip, just a couple $$$ would be fine, but that's just me.
