Depends on your skin, try laying out with maybe a little sunblock for only an hr or 2, then build up. Until you see how your skin does. My aunt who is a red head freckled use to lay out without sunblock, she used coco butter for 30 min each day. Of course she never had that deep tan that so many of us love but it was attractive. Burning is not necessary, just take your time until you find what is right for you and don't forget to use a moisturizer.

Baby's gotta burn to get a tan, try Hawaiian tropics oil though... I use it, works great, you do burn a little bit though.. But you tan super fast.. Right after your done tanning if you follow up with an Aloe Vera moisturizer it reduces the burn effect soooo much!

it depends on where you live and how easy you burn. It is better to start slow maybe 10 to 15 minutes at first then build up.
