the red spot you see is not really a briuse at all. they are thousands of tiny bursted capillaries (which are the tiny blood vessles just below the surface of the skin). It appears as a briuse because thousands of tiny blood spot clot just beneith the skin where they can obtain oxygen and turn that familiar dark red or bluish color. An actual briuse is caused by the same thing and damages tissue as well. The tissue from a hickey is not actually damaged and is why hickeys heal much faster than briuses and hurt less.
