I would get a detangler spray and saturate the hair where the knot is, let it soak in a few minutes, then take a comb, preferably wide tooth (NOT a brush!) and start at the ends and gently work up to where the knot is. If that doesn't work, you can try the peanut butter trick mentioned earlier, it shouldn't damage the hair if you do that, but it will be really gross and maybe take washing your hair 2-3 times before it all comes out.

A lot of people try to comb down from the roots and basically push the knot down, but that can cause a lot of damage and break off strands of hair. If you start at the bottom and work your way up, it takes patience, but you won't damage your hair. Also, I do not recommend you try to comb out the knot when your hair is wet because your hair is very fragile when wet and you can actually do a lot of damage that way. Just spray on the detangler.

Oh, and I've also heard that Downey Fabric Softner (liquid) works really well without any kind of damager to your hair. Apparently Downey is just water and fragrance so it won't hurt your hair, but I don't know about other brands so I'd just stick to Downey.

Good Luck!

I used to use peanut butter when i was way little, because of the oil in the butter. Don't use too much!
