Try to find topics that you have in common with the person. For example, if they're talking about a movie they just saw, you can say, "That sounds like a good movie. I saw ___ movie this week, it was great. I like the scenes of England, too." Just join in and compliment the conversation that has just occurred.

Also, if you're trying to form friendships with them, remember that troubles and worries are what binds us to others. For example, telling someone at work who says their tired that you had a long weekend, too, creates events of a friendship.

Why - can't you find enough topics? Then look around and start with your immediate surroundings, then your neighbourhood, your areas of interest, funny anecdotes, jokes actually the list is endless. You just have to get into the art of talking.

Wow and cool are good responses.....
People love to talk about themselves and they love sincere flattery. You can come up with more variety in your responses...
like: "that is interesting, tell me more," or, "I never thought of it that way until you explained it," or, "You don't say?" "incredible"
"remarkable"...."unbelievable"

You can always jump in to change the subject with: "that reminds me of the time," "the reason I ask is because......"
