I read that high pressure sodium lighting, the kind used to illuminate streets and parking lots, is very effecient, 140 lumens per watt. That represents a substantial cost saving over other types of lighting, such as incandenscent or fluorescent. The only drawback is the monochromatic amber color, but I figure I can get used to that. I mean, how important can it be it to see colors in the home? Will I have a hard time persuading my wife to agree to this?

Sodium Vapour Lamps take a high amount of wattage (via a transformer it kicks the voltage up to a range of the 1,000's), the wiring might not be able to take it

If you want to get efficient lighting, I recommend LED lighting. LED's use between 2 and 5 volts, and have a current draw of 20mA (.020 Amps).

Both forms of Lighting, on a medium to large scale application, does not run cheap.

Here's a good chart showing different types of lighting

you may set up it, yet you desire a qualified electrician to certify the installation. it could not count in case you do it right and not something is going incorrect. even nonetheless, interior the worst case, case in point if there is an insurance declare as a results of defective electric powered installation then there will be a heck of a good number of problems with the reality that the installation isn't qualified. in case you do not understand what you're doing, or have any doubts in any respect approximately what you're doing, do not possibility it.
